An Analog Chorus Designed for Bass in the "Anadime" Spirit

The chorus is one of those classic effects that thickens the sound, widens the image, and adds musical vibration without going overboard. With the ABC-1 Anadime Bass Chorus, Providence relies on an analog BBD delay line (Bucket Brigade Device), an architecture known for its more "alive" and warmer sound than many digital approaches.

The "bass chorus" orientation is not just a marketing claim: the ABC-1 is designed to deliver an expressive chorus while respecting the rhythmic foundation. The result: you can move from dark, enveloping arpeggios to smooth chord progressions, then to sharper riffs and solos, all while maintaining a sense of control and definition.

For Which Bassist, Styles, and Contexts?

The Providence ABC-1 targets bassists who want a high-end analog chorus that is easy to integrate into a pedalboard, both to enrich a "clean" sound and to complement a chain with overdrive or fuzz. Its behavior suits both intermediate musicians and professionals: the effect is simple enough to dial in quickly, yet offers enough nuance to precisely refine your texture.

In terms of styles, it feels at home in pop (controlled width and brightness), rock (thickness and presence), funk (subtle movement), atmospheric music (broad pads), and even heavier contexts where you want to keep the low end solid. In the studio, it helps to "sit" a bass in the mix without hardening it. Live, it helps fill the space, especially in power trios or when arrangements leave room to breathe.

Settings and Design: Depth, Low-End Stability, and Optimized Bypass

The ABC-1 offers a very musical approach to chorus control. The Depth and Speed controls allow you to sweep from subtle modulation (ideal for thickening without being heard) to a more pronounced chorus for featured passages. The 3-position "DEEP" switch affects the dimensional sensation: handy for instantly adapting the breadth to your playing, bass, and amp.

The highlight for bass remains the high-pass filter (HPF). On a deep chorus, the lows can lose perceived pitch stability and create a blurry impression. Here, the HPF allows better control of the chorus effect on the low end to preserve the foundation while maintaining width in the mids/highs: very effective for staying intelligible in a dense mix.

Providence also emphasizes signal integrity and reliability. The S.C.T. (Single Contact True Bypass) minimizes the number of contacts passed through when the pedal is bypassed, aiming to maintain better signal quality and robust switching. The D.C.G. (double contact grounding) reinforces the ground at the output to reduce false contacts and ensure stable operation on stage.

Finally, the multifunction LED is not just an on/off indicator: it also monitors the battery. When the voltage drops below 7V, the LED intensity dims and begins to turn off; the effect can still operate, but replacing the battery at this point helps maintain optimal performance.

Sound

The Providence ABC-1 delivers a rich, warm, and thick chorus with that analog texture that makes the sound feel like it "breathes" with your playing. It can remain very subtle to simply widen a pick bass or become more enveloping for singing lines high up the neck. The dynamic response maintains an organic feel: playing harder changes the modulation perception, helping to achieve an expressive tone rather than a mere "set" effect.

Thanks to the HPF and DEEP mode, you can steer the pedal toward controlled transparency (the low end stays solid, the effect sits around it) or a more pronounced coloration, ideal for featured parts in the arrangement. It's an excellent choice if you're looking for a chorus that sounds "big" without sacrificing low-end impact.
