What PSP Flare Is For

PSP Flare is a dynamic processing plugin designed to provide smooth, musical, and controlled compression on a wide variety of sources. Originally intended for film and TV post-production (dialogues, ambiances, stems, group buses), it is equally relevant in music production to stabilize a vocal, round off a drum bus, homogenize a group of instruments, or secure a work master thanks to its output limiter. Its distinctive character helps preserve the sense of movement and energy while controlling level variations.

Main Features

A Compression Engine with Unique Behavior

At the heart of PSP Flare is a mono-band algorithm based on a probabilistic compression logic, combined with a wide knee for smoother transitions. The result aims for a more "organic" dynamic reduction, useful when you want to control without squashing, especially on buses or complex material (dialogues with variations, live takes, ensembles, pads, rhythm guitars).

Detection, Timing, and Transient Control

To adapt the compressor's reaction to your source, PSP Flare offers a Peak or RMS detector: Peak to catch attacks and secure peaks, RMS for a more overall and stable feel. The lookahead reduces transients more cleanly, while the automatic release adjustment option helps maintain consistent compression when dynamics vary greatly over time.

Musical Sidechain and Easy Mix Integration

The sidechain high-pass filter (with progressive control and link mode) facilitates working on bass-rich sources: you can limit pumping, preserve the low end, and target compression where it's most useful. The Dry/Compressed Mix control simplifies parallel compression directly within the plugin, ideal for enhancing a track without losing the original attack or texture.

Color, Output Level, and Safety

A modeled preamp section at the input adds a touch of character, useful for slightly thickening before gain reduction. At the end of the chain, a brickwall limiter with adjustable ceiling and release time contains peaks and delivers a more controlled level, whether for a bus, a stem, or a session output. The auto makeup gain option speeds up settings by maintaining a consistent perceived level when adjusting threshold and ratio.
