What PSP Impressor Is For

PSP Impressor is a compression plugin designed to provide dynamic control, cohesion, and impact to your productions. It is used to stabilize vocals, thicken bass, add "punch" to drums, or glue a mix on a master bus without losing musicality. Thanks to its detection modes and advanced side-chain, it covers a wide range of uses, from transparent compression on complex groups to more colored and deliberate settings.

Main Features

Versatile Compression: From Character to Surgical Precision

PSP Impressor combines an approach inspired by classic compressors (tubes, opto-electronic) and modern compressors to achieve both a "smooth" and organic behavior as well as precise and stable compression. You have a wide selection of soft knee curves to shape the transition to gain reduction, making it easier to dial in on delicate sources like vocals, acoustic guitars, or overheads.

Peak or RMS Detection and Compression Modes

Depending on the material, you can switch between Peak detection (reactive, ideal for taming transients) and RMS detection (more musical, perfect for smoothing a performance). PSP Impressor offers feedback and feedback + feedforward compression modes to adjust the sense of "grip" and how the compressor follows the signal. This range helps choose between very direct control and a softer, more gradual action.

Advanced Side-Chain: Pumping Control and De-Essing

The internal or external side-chain includes filtering that significantly influences the compressor's behavior. In practice, you can reduce pumping caused by an overly dominant kick drum, stabilize a drum bus, or conversely make an instrument "breathe" in rhythm with another track. By targeting a specific frequency range in the detector, it is also possible to use PSP Impressor as a de-esser to tame sibilance without crushing the entire timbre.

Output Staging: Limiting or Soft Saturation

At the output, a dedicated algorithm can operate as a brick wall limiter or as soft saturation to preserve peaks above 0 dBFS. This is a practical asset to secure a bus, add slight density, or increase perceived loudness without degrading transient clarity. A new output limiter is also integrated for more modern and cleaner control.

Oversampling and FAT Option: Precision and Cleanliness

The compression engine runs with internal oversampling to improve modeling and limit artifacts. The FAT option adds an extra layer of processing (quad sampling and up to 16x when FAT is engaged) for even more faithful reproduction, especially appreciated on harmonically rich sources or when applying heavier compression. The plugin supports high sample rates up to 400 kHz.

Modern Workflow: Interface, Metering, and Fine Controls

The graphical interface is high resolution and resizable, facilitating work on high-density screens. On the control side, you have several Auto Attack and Auto Release modes (four each), an adjustable Auto Makeup, adjustable channel Link, and input/output metering modes (Pre/Post) with a Compare option. An adjustable VU reference level and linking between input and output knobs simplify gain staging and unbiased A/B comparisons.

In Practice: From Mixing to Mastering, and in Tandem with Saturation

PSP Impressor excels on vocals, drums, acoustic guitars, buses, and mastering. It also integrates well into chains with saturation: placed before a saturation, it stabilizes dynamics like a bus compressor before a tape machine; placed after, it controls and polishes the generated density. The idea is to experiment with subtle settings and treatment order depending on the style (pop, rock, electronic, hip-hop, film music).
