Summary of This Score

Often associated with 19th-century salons, Fryderyk Chopin's waltzes have nonetheless sparked lively debates: admired as true masterpieces by some, considered closer to "salon music" by others. This ambivalence is also their strength: beneath an apparent elegance, Chopin concentrates an art of singing, rubato, and harmonic color that requires refined touch and mastery of phrasing.

This edition is part of the "Complete Works" series, prepared by Ignacy Jan Paderewski, Ludwik Bronarski, and Jozef Turczynski, with the goal of offering a restitution as faithful as possible to the composer's intentions. The editorial committee firmly relies on manuscripts, copies validated by Chopin himself, as well as first editions, in order to provide a solid musical text for interpretation.

The collection notably gathers several staples of the repertoire, including the "Grande Valse Brillante" in E-flat major Op. 18, the three "Grande Valse Brillante" Op. 34, the waltz in A-flat major Op. 42, as well as waltzes from Opp. 64, 69, and 70. Also included are waltzes without opus numbers (including pieces in E minor, E major, A-flat major, and E-flat major), offering rich material to work on the Chopinian style: balance between left and right hand, cantabile, pedal, agogics, and dance character without rigidity.
