Essential Information About the Radial StageBug SB-4 Active Direct Box
Essential Information About the Radial StageBug SB-4 Active Direct Box
- Optimized for Piezoelectric Pickups : designed to preserve the natural tone of double basses, violins, cellos, mandolins, dobros, and other acoustics equipped with a piezo.
- Very High Input Impedance : engineered to smooth out peaks often perceived as "harsh" with piezos and to improve frequency response.
- Long-Distance Balanced Signal : high-to-low impedance conversion to transmit the signal over long cable runs without noticeable loss.
- Feedback-Resistant and Stage-Ready : high-pass filter + 180-degree polarity reverse, with a rugged metal chassis and phantom power (48V) supplied by the console.

A StageBug Designed as a Compact Version of the PZ-DI
The StageBug SB-4 follows the philosophy of the PZ-DI, from which it derives its concept: to offer an interface truly adapted to instruments equipped with a piezo pickup, where a standard DI can harden the sound and create a sense of unnaturalness. More compact and easier to access, the SB-4 aims for efficiency on stage and in the studio, with a portable format and a "plug and play" approach via phantom power.
Who and What Situations Make the SB-4 Stand Out?
This Radial direct box is particularly relevant for acoustic instrumentalists who plug directly into a mixing console, stage snake, or studio interface: double bass players, string quartets, theater musicians, folk, bluegrass, or contemporary music artists. If you use a piezo pickup (bridge, under-saddle pickup, contact mic), the SB-4 helps restore a more "instrument-like" feel rather than "pickup," with cleaner lows and a less harsh attack.
It is also well suited for setups where the distance to the console is significant: the signal is converted and transmitted in balanced mode, which limits losses and interference over long cable runs, while maintaining good dynamics and low distortion in the audio chain.

Questions frequently asked
Is the Radial STAGEBUG-4 Piezo suitable for an acoustic guitar equipped with a piezo pickup?
Its ultra-high impedance input, specified between 5 Mohms and 10 Megohms according to the manufacturer, is designed for piezo pickups. The output aims for a more natural response, with less harshness in the upper midrange.
Can a mixing console and an amplifier be connected simultaneously?
The XLR output provides a balanced connection to a mixing console, while the 6.35 mm jack output serves as a link to an amplifier in parallel.
Does the DI require an external power supply?
Power is supplied by phantom power from the console, without an external power adapter. Phantom power must be available on the XLR input used.
How can feedback be reduced with a double bass or an acoustic instrument?
A high-pass filter attenuates low frequencies that can cause resonances. The 180-degree polarity reverse switch can also help reduce certain phase issues related to monitors or the room. A ground lift switch is included to address ground loops.
What are the dimensions of the StageBug SB-4?
The enclosure measures 114 x 47 x 34 mm and features a thick metal chassis with reinforced connectors.
