Historical Context and Positioning in the Range

The result of extensive development work, the Rammerdrum 12-inch represents the second generation of melodic percussion instruments developed by Marco Tirino, creator and craftsman at Rammerdrum. This evolution is part of a typical handmade instrument refinement process: adjusting the balance between notes, stabilizing touch response, and enhancing overall musicality. Within the range, this "Gen 2" version emphasizes play consistency and harmonic richness, suitable both for intuitive exploration and more structured uses (workshops, therapy, education).

Who This Drum/Instrument Is For

This melodic percussion of the tongue drum type (also called hank drum or tank drum ) is aimed at a wide audience: from beginners seeking an immediate and rewarding instrument, to intermediate or advanced musicians looking for an expressive timbre to enrich their textures. It is particularly suited to ambient, relaxation, meditation, yoga environments, as well as music therapy contexts where the softness of attack and note stability promote listening and calm. In groups, it also fits well within percussion ensembles, providing a simple melodic layer that is easy to integrate.

Features and Innovations

Handmade from a stainless steel sheet, the Rammerdrum 12-inch is designed to offer a balanced response between each note, a key aspect for this type of instrument where homogeneity determines playing comfort. Its compact size facilitates setup: the instrument can be played resting on the thighs for an intimate playing experience, or placed on a padded stand to optimize stability and resonance. Playing is done with hands for more organic and nuanced attacks, or with soft rubber mallets for a rounder sound, more consistent projection, and greater control during repetitive passages.

Sound Characteristics

Stainless steel provides a sound signature that is both rich and clear : a clean but non-aggressive attack, generous sustain, and harmonics that add depth to sustained notes. On a tongue drum, perceived quality depends as much on the fundamental note as on how the harmonics "settle" after the impact; here, the goal is a resonance that remains musical, without marked imbalance from one tongue to another.

Depending on the playing technique, the character changes noticeably. With hands, fine nuances are achieved, ideal for slow, breathy phrases, with a touch that favors dynamics and micro-variations. With soft mallets, the sound gains regularity and roundness, which suits ostinatos, gentle pulses, and relaxation sessions where a stable sound flow is sought. In both cases, the 9-note tuning allows for creating simple patterns, drones, call-and-response, and overlays, while maintaining the intuitive approach typical of wellness instruments.
