What the Reason Rack Instrument-Rack Extension Is For

This Rack Extension is designed to create sounds based on the real behavior of physical objects set into vibration. It is used both to produce expressive instruments (modeled impacts, marimbas and percussions, plucked or bowed strings, metallic resonators) and to generate modern sound materials (drones, zaps, unstable resonances, tonal FX). In composition, sound design, or music for picture, it becomes an excellent starting point for "playable" sounds that react to performance variations and automation.

Main Features

Physical Modeling: Object, Material, and Resonance

The core engine is based on selecting a type of object (plate, tube, rod, or string), then modeling its properties in real time. By adjusting the material, stiffness, and damping, you define how the object "sounds" and decays: sharp and short, round and woody, bright and metallic, or conversely unstable and grainy.

Three Excitation Modes to Vary Playing

The excitation section offers 3 types to radically change articulation: strike for sharp and percussive attacks, bow for sustained and expressive sounds, and continuous modulation for gradual movements, perfect for pads, drones, and evolving textures. The excitation force and position parameters allow you to refine dynamics and timbre, as if moving the point of impact or friction on the object.

Sound Sculpting: Resonator, Filter, and Drive

To fit the result into a mix, the instrument includes a filter section as well as an onboard Drive. The resonator, adjustable via its frequency (and the filter), helps focus energy on a specific harmonic area, accentuate a tonal character, or transform a simple excitation into a true melodic instrument. The Drive adds density, presence, and edge, useful both for giving relief to a percussion and for beefing up an electronic texture.

Advanced Patching in Reason: CV, Audio, and Rear Routing

Like any Rack Extension designed for Reason, integration goes beyond the front panel: CV and audio connections are available at the rear to build creative chains. Synchronize and animate parameters via CV, automate organic variations, or route audio to your favorite treatments within the Rack to create hybrid instruments and custom effects.
