What Extension Reason Rack Is For

Extension Reason Rack is designed for spectral sound creation within Reason, combining real-time analysis and generation through resynthesis. It is particularly suited for electro, ambient, cinematic, sound design productions and any music seeking moving timbres, harmonic drones, vocal/formant textures, or radical transformations of sound material. Thanks to its two layers, it allows both the construction of complex sounds (thickness, width, movement) and the creation of sharp contrasts between a stable harmonic base and a more experimental layer.

Main Features

Spectral synthesis and real-time resynthesis

The core of the instrument relies on real-time Fourier analysis that breaks down sound into frequency components, then reconstructs it via resynthesis. This principle opens the door to timbres impossible to achieve with classic subtractive synthesis, allowing targeted transformations on spectral content while maintaining musicality suitable for production.

Two independent spectral layers and morphing

The 2 spectral layers can be morphed separately, enabling organic transitions, rich overlays, or dynamic responses based on velocity and automation. The selectable output presets speed up workflow, whether you seek a sharper presence, a more diffuse rendering, or a more textural behavior.

FFT, window settings, and fine spectrum control

The FFT size and window shape are configurable to adjust the balance between spectral resolution and temporal response. You can thus favor very precise harmonic details (useful on pads and drones) or a snappier reaction (useful on attacks, percussion, and effects). The zoom, offset, and mix parameters facilitate shaping the frequency content, layer by layer, for quick yet controlled sound design.

Integrated modulation per layer

Each layer includes dedicated envelopes and LFOs to modulate the spectrum, formant, and filter. The result: lively, animated, and expressive sounds, ranging from slowly breathing pads to more aggressive rhythmic effects, without multiplying external devices in the Rack.

Multimodal filters, Drive, and global effects

The filter section offers multimodal filter types and a Drive to add character and thicken the signal, whether to anchor a bass, highlight a lead, or dirty a texture. To finalize the sound, global effects (Chorus, Delay, Reverb) allow instant spatial placement, stereo field widening, and a mix-ready result.

CV and modular integration in Reason

Extension Reason Rack provides full CV modulation of spectral parameters, filters, and effect controls. The CV and audio connections at the rear enable natural integration into a modular Reason Rack workflow: CV sequences, external envelopes, creative routings, sidechain, or fine control via Rack modulation tools.
