Bitmap 2: The Evolution of a Bitcrusher That Became a Reference

The Red Panda Bitmap 2 builds on the foundational concept of musical bitcrushing (resolution and sample rate reduction) and takes it much further. While a classic bitcrusher often just "degrades" the signal, Bitmap 2 adds stages of non-linearities through wave shaping, wave folding, and a window comparator, resulting in a richer, more controllable, and genuinely more expressive digital distortion.

The result: a pedal capable of being a simple layer of grit on a clean sound or a true sound design engine for electronic, industrial, and experimental textures.

Thanks to the Drive control, it works well with both single-coil and humbucker pickups and handles stronger signals without flinching (ideal for synths, samplers, and drum machines).

In the studio, it sculpts lo-fi layers, aggressive leads, or granular textures. Live, presets and external control (expression, switch, MIDI) allow switching from subtle crunch to perfectly tempo-synced chaos.

Controls, Modulation, and Presets: A Pedal Designed for Creation

At the heart of the Bitmap 2 is a fractional bit reduction (from 24 bits down to 1 bit) and a sample rate reduction (from 48 kHz down to 110 Hz). Add to that a sample rate modulation section (triangle, square, and random waveforms): you can achieve anything from a simple shimmer, a "digital" vibrato, to rhythmic glitches that completely transform note attacks.

To maintain musical control, Bitmap 2 offers a very useful Mix control: retain the lows and impact of the original signal, or dial in the bitcrushing for a subtle effect. The envelope can modulate sample rate or mix, making the distortion dynamic and responsive to playing style (attack, staccato, palm mutes, pick dynamics).

Regarding integration, everything is there: presets (4 accessible on the front panel, 127 via MIDI), extended parameters via MIDI (USB or TRS), MIDI clock synchronization, and a Web editor to tweak presets and access advanced settings. The soft-touch bypass can operate in momentary or latching mode, and the switch is user-replaceable.

Sound

The Bitmap 2 does not aim for transparency: it delivers a proud digital signature. At moderate settings, it can evoke the grainy warmth of vintage converters and samplers, with generous sustain and behavior designed not to "spit" on staccato notes. Pushing sample rate reduction plunges you into an 8-bit world: pixelated attacks, broken harmonics, and melodies that become intentionally inharmonic.

With sample rate modulation, the pedal shifts from subtle movement (ideal for bringing a riff to life) to entirely new, almost synthetic textures. The 4-pole low-pass filter helps tame extreme highs and sculpt a more "mixable" sound, especially on very aggressive settings.
