A Modern Approach to Two Iconic Synthesis Effects

The ring modulator and frequency shifter are legendary "laboratory" effects: ring mod creates sidebands (sums and differences of frequencies) often producing bell-like, robotic, or intentionally dissonant sounds, while frequency shifting linearly shifts the spectrum, generating very particular movement sensations and distinctly electronic colors.

The Red Panda Radius follows this tradition but with an approach designed for today's musician: its "8-quadrant multiplier" algorithm allows a smooth transition between ring mod and frequency shifting, while offering distinct frequency ratios for the high and low components. The result is a much wider palette, ranging from musical and dynamic to radically experimental.

Who Is It For, Which Styles, and In What Contexts?

The Radius is aimed at guitarists and bassists who enjoy sculpting their sound, as well as keyboardists and sound design enthusiasts looking to move beyond classic modulations (chorus, phaser, vibrato). Thanks to its instrument- and line-level compatible input, it fits equally well on a guitar pedalboard, in a studio chain, on a synth, or in a creative mixing setup.

In terms of styles, it excels in ambient, post-rock, electronic, indie, experimental, noise, but can also add a very expressive signature in funk (nervous tremolo), rock (bell-like textures and metallic harmonics), or film music. Live, presets and MIDI sync secure changes; in the studio, stereo and deep modulation invite layering rich, moving textures.

Features and Controls: A Modulation Pedal Designed for Exploration

The Radius combines ring modulation and frequency shifting with a continuous Mix control to precisely balance each world, from subtle shimmer to total timbre transformation. The Shift 2x switch allows selecting 2x frequency ratios for the upper or lower sidebands, ideal for tightening the sound, enhancing brightness, or conversely thickening the low end.

The heart of the pedal is driven by an advanced LFO (triangle, square, random, intelligent random, and X modulations) and a step modulator with 1 to 8 steps programmable on the front panel. Add to that an envelope follower and envelope triggers (one-shot, pulse, random, step), and you get modulations that breathe with your attack, dynamics, and groove.

For control, the Radius offers tap tempo, presets (4 accessible directly, up to 100 via MIDI), a configurable AUX switch (tap, tune, preset, LFO), a versatile CTRL input (expression, CV, tap, TRS MIDI, switch), as well as full MIDI operation via USB and TRS MIDI. The bypass can be configured as buffered analog or DSP bypass (soft fade on engage and disengage).

Sound Character

The Radius is a pedal that "re-colors" the sound rather than simply moving volume or phase. Expect bell-like tones, metallic textures, crystalline timbres, and oscillations that can become hypnotic, especially in stereo. Pushing the modulation generates dense harmonic structures, perfect for pads, drones, or synthetic leads.

The pitch tracking (monophonic) changes the game: instead of random dissonance that's hard to place, you can maintain a more coherent pitch relationship in your playing, making ring mod and frequency shifting much more "playable." Dynamics are present: playing softer keeps you in shimmer and glimmer; playing harder reveals a sharper, more spectacular character.
