A Module Designed for Studio and Post-Production Synchronization Within the RME Ecosystem
The RME TCO is an optional expansion intended for certain RME HDSPe family cards. Its purpose is simple: to add a robust hardware synchronization layer to the system, essential whenever your audio needs to "lock" to a timecode or video reference. Installed in a free slot inside the computer chassis, the module connects to the main card via a ribbon cable and becomes the input/output point for synchronization signals (LTC, Word Clock, and video) used in studios, control rooms, or post-production.
In an advanced setup, a single TCO can also be shared among multiple cards simultaneously (multi-card mode), provided it is connected to a supported card. This approach centralizes the timecode/clock reference for all audio I/Os managed by the involved cards while maintaining a clean and stable internal architecture.

The TCO is aimed at users working with video timelines, multitrack recordings, and workflows where synchronization is not optional: sound editors, post-production engineers, dubbing studios, broadcast systems, live recordings with video control, as well as composers and sound designers who need to exchange sessions with timecode.
Specifically, it allows you to receive an LTC timecode to precisely position playback/recording, and also to generate LTC at the hardware level to control other equipment. In the studio, this translates to better coherence between audio, video, and external devices, with more predictable synchronization than a purely software solution, especially during chase and lock phases.

SteadyClock: A Reliable Clock Even from LTC and Video
The heart of the TCO relies on SteadyClock, a technology designed to reduce jitter and stabilize the clock. The module does not merely extract an absolute position from LTC; it can also derive a high-quality Word Clock from LTC and video. The result: cleaner synchronization and more secure locking when your reference is not an "ideal" Word Clock but a timecode or video signal.
Extended Timecode Compatibility and Automatic Video Detection
The TCO supports common frame rates 24, 25, 29.97, and 30, with selectable drop-frame or non-drop-frame. Pull-Up / Pull-Down modes (speed variations) are also available, facilitating integration into conversion or conform workflows. PAL and NTSC video formats are automatically detected and processed, simplifying setup when switching between environments.
Position Transmission: APP, MTC, and Hardware LTC Generation
The received timecode can be transmitted to your audio/video applications as ASIO Positioning Protocol (APP) or MTC. Conversely, an application can send APP or MTC to the TCO so the module generates hardware LTC. This aspect is crucial: hardware generation aims for minimal jitter because it does not rely on a software/driver routine executed non-deterministically.
On the system side, behavior varies by platform: on Windows, the TCO provides SMPTE position in both APP and MTC Sync. On macOS (Mac OS X), SMPTE position is provided in MTC synchronization only. This distinction helps you choose the most suitable sync mode depending on your workstation and software.
Chase Functions: Settings for Smoother Pursuit
For chase situations, the TCO offers several "flywheel" functions that facilitate locking and continuity: adjustable drop-out length, continuous sync mode, or Jam mode. These parameters allow adapting synchronization behavior to the constraints of the set, editing, or a more or less stable timecode source.

The module is designed for certain cards in the RME HDSPe family and requires a flat cable connection to the main card. Therefore, the compatibility of the card used must be ensured before installation.
Which LTC formats are supported by this module?
The LTC frame rates supported are 24, 25, 29.97, and 30 fps, in drop-frame or non-drop-frame modes. Pull-Up and Pull-Down modes of ±0.1% and ±4% are available.
Is it possible to synchronize multiple cards with a single TCO?
Multicard operation allows sharing a single module across several supported cards. The timecode reference and clock can thus be centralized for the relevant audio inputs/outputs.
What SMPTE synchronization is available on Windows and macOS?
On Windows, the SMPTE position is transmitted via APP protocol and MTC Sync. On macOS, it is available only through MTC synchronization. The LTC generated by the module can come from APP or MTC information sent by the application.
Does the TCO accept a PAL or NTSC video reference?
Detection and processing of PAL and NTSC video formats are automatic, while SteadyClock can derive a Word Clock from the LTC or video signal.
