Historical Context and Positioning in the Range

The CY-14R-T is part of the evolution of Roland's V-Cymbals, with a clear goal: to bring the feel of an acoustic cymbal closer while maintaining the precision and versatility of an electronic pad. Slimmer than previous generations, it positions itself as a "premium" option for V-Drums drummers seeking a more natural touch, better dynamic response, and a more realistic stage presence.

Target Audience for This Drum/Cymbal Pad

This pad is aimed at intermediate to advanced drummers who want to refine their expressiveness in both Ride and Crash playing without compromising playability. It is particularly suited for contexts where nuance is essential (pop, funk, jazz fusion, gospel, contemporary music), while remaining perfectly comfortable in rock and metal thanks to its clear response and stable triggering. Whether in a home studio or on stage, the CY-14R-T offers precise control to work on articulation (bow, edge, bell) and modern techniques.

Features and Innovations

The major innovation of the CY-14R-T is its significantly slimmer design, engineered to improve the "rebound" and natural movement of the cymbal. Playing becomes smoother, with a more uniform response across the entire surface, facilitating nuances, crescendos, and accent control. Depending on the V-Drums module used, the system can be configured for use as a Ride cymbal (bow and bell) or a Crash cymbal (bow and edge).

On advanced V-Drums modules, three-zone triggering is achieved via two cables, allowing independent sounds for the edge, bow, and bell. Like an acoustic cymbal, muting is intuitive by grabbing the edge, a major advantage for stage playing and precise arrangements. Note: specific triggering parameters for the CY-14R-T may not be available on all V-Drums modules, depending on the generation and editing capabilities of the module.

Sound

On an electronic cymbal pad, the "sound" depends directly on the quality of the module, but the CY-14R-T plays a decisive role in the fidelity of interpretation. Its consistent response and distinct zones facilitate credible articulation: Ride attacks on the bow, more open crashes on the edge, and a sharper bell when the module allows dedicated management. The result: your samples and sound modeling gain realism, as the cymbal more finely translates dynamics, intentions, and placements.

The improved feel under the sticks also contributes to better control of nuances: ghost cymbal notes, accents, and variations between "tip" playing and more forceful strokes are easier to manage. In live settings, the acoustic look enhances the visual illusion and integrates naturally into a hybrid or 100% electronic kit, while retaining the control and repeatability advantages unique to V-Drums.
