Historical Context and Positioning in the Range
Derived from the "V-Drums Acoustic Design" concept, the KD-180L-BK embodies Roland's approach of combining the ergonomics and stage presence of an acoustic drum kit with the reliability of electronic triggering. Within the range, it occupies a compact 18-inch position, designed for electronic kits with a "full acoustic" look without the bulk of a deep shell.
Who This Bass Drum Is For
Designed for drummers from beginners to experts seeking a realistic striking feel, it suits pop, rock, funk, gospel/worship, and contemporary music styles. Its compactness appeals to gigging musicians, educational studios, and home studios looking for acoustic presence, quick setup, and controlled MIDI/electronic capture.
Features and Innovations
The sensor housed in the drumhead is mounted like on an acoustic shell, reproducing the internal air pressure with each beater impact. This architecture improves playability, level consistency, and tolerance to double pedals. The "TRIGGER OUTPUT (jack)" output facilitates integration with your module. The "Midnight Sparkle" wrap and chrome hardware ensure durability and elegance, while the included accessories (cable, key, hoop protector, manual) allow immediate setup.
Sound
On an electronic kit, playing quality and triggering directly affect sample realism. The shallow 7" wooden shell provides a sharp attack feel, a dry and controlled response, favoring clear transients and high velocity precision. The reproduction of air pressure offers a "push" close to an acoustic bass drum, enhancing the connection between foot and sound. Result: stable tracking, readable ghost kicks, and dynamics nuances faithfully conveyed by your module.

Questions frequently asked
Is the Roland KD-180L-BK compatible with a double pedal?
This model accepts both single and double bass drum pedals, with triggering ensured by a single trigger placed on the head.
What connection does this electronic bass drum pad use?
The TRIGGER OUTPUT uses a 6.35 mm jack. A connecting cable is provided for module connection.
What are the dimensions of the Roland KD-180L-BK bass drum?
The shell measures 18 inches in diameter and 7 inches in depth. The overall dimensions without spikes are 502 x 240 x 478 mm, with a weight of 5.6 kg.
