Summary of This Score
Composed in 1789, this sonata has a unique editorial history: the autograph score, originally kept in Bückeburg under the title "Sonata per il Cembalo o Piano-Forte et Violoncello obligato," was lost during World War II. For a long time, only a heavily arranged and transposed version in D major remained, far from the original intent. This new edition offers a restoration of the original state in A major, based on coherent choices of articulation and dynamics, aiming to recover a more authentic reading of the classical style. Designed for daily musical work, the score offers an excellent balance between playing pleasure and reasonable demands: the dialogue between the keyboard (harpsichord or fortepiano) and the cello is rewarding, the form is clear, and the interpretative challenges (phrasing, breathing, contrasts) make it an ideal piece to develop musicality in duo, while remaining perfectly suitable for the stage.
