Summary of This Method

Austrian violinist and composer Jakob Dont (1815-1888) first made his mark within prestigious Viennese institutions before choosing to dedicate himself to pedagogy. Although he wrote many pieces now less frequently performed (opera potpourris, character pieces), his Studies and Caprices op. 35 have established themselves as a cornerstone of violin training.

Designed for an advanced level, these studies aim for comprehensive improvement: accuracy and stability in shifts, agility and independence of the fingers, mastery of position shifts, work on double stops, intonation in complex contexts, as well as style and sound projection. On the bowing side, the method demands precision of gesture, variety of attacks and articulations, and the endurance essential for virtuosic passages.

This edition was prepared by Max Rostal taking into account modern violin technique. It is enriched with preparatory exercises and variations that facilitate entry into the most demanding passages and help structure daily practice. A resource particularly suited for advanced students, conservatory students, and anyone wishing to strengthen their technique with a recognized method.
