Summary of This Method
This method is intended for anyone wishing to learn the organ seriously, provided they already have piano technique. It begins with essential pedal work, designed as a technical foundation to be patiently consolidated: the exercises must be played in all the proposed keys, progressively increasing the tempo to gain precision, endurance, and ease. The method then develops according to a clear musical logic: polyphony is enriched and densified throughout the pieces, moving from two-voice writing to textures with three voices and more. This progression allows the acquisition of a more stable and flexible voice leading, while refining internal listening and coordination between hands and feet.
Beyond technique, the book emphasizes the interpretation of polyphonic music. Relying on knowledge of the form and architecture of the pieces, the student learns to clarify the layers, articulate the lines, and develop the essential reflexes to approach the fugue accurately. The different ways of registering on the organ are also presented, with their stylistic particularities: colorful playing, solo playing, full organ. The learning path is intentionally "winding": certain passages recur several times to be revisited with greater mastery, taking into account stylistic and formal requirements. Finally, for the beginning organist, this method also aims at a musical and spiritual understanding of the emancipation of organ music from the vocal model, following the historical evolution of the repertoire, up to being able to artistically interpret both ancient and modern works, notably those of Johann Sebastian Bach.
