Asian Songs and Rhythms brings together piano pieces stemming from the work of G. I. Gurdjieff, a thinker and traveler born in the Caucasus, whose teaching sought to create a bridge between Eastern esoteric knowledge and Western scientific thought. Over many years of traveling through Central Asia and the Near East, he collected melodies and ritual dances. His friend and student Thomas de Hartmann documented them and then transformed them into piano pieces, preserving the spirit of the sources while offering a playable and expressive piano writing.
The collection particularly highlights pulse, modal colors, and changes of atmosphere: meditative songs, livelier dances, evocations of rites and ceremonies. The whole constitutes excellent material for working on rhythmic precision, articulation, voice balance, and the ability to make a simple line "sing" with a wide palette of nuances.
