This selection of songs with piano accompaniment follows on from the three volumes of Das deutsche Kunstlied. It offers a coherent overview of the Lied and art song repertoire, focusing on pieces that can genuinely be sung by young performers. The aim is clear: to provide high-quality musical material that can be used immediately in singing lessons, helping to develop vocal line, diction and an understanding of the text without placing undue strain on the voice.
Alongside representative examples from every period of German-language song, the volume explores other horizons with a series of non-German songs, as well as arrangements of popular songs treated "in the manner of Lieder", with carefully crafted piano accompaniment. The transpositions have been made with less experienced voices in mind, so that the collection as a whole has a range equivalent to a volume intended for lower voices.
