Summary of This Sheet Music

On November 14, 1828, for his sister Fanny's birthday, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy presented her with a piano piece in E-flat major entitled "Lied." Shortly after, Fanny referred to this work as "Lied ohne Worte" ("Song without Words"): this was the first appearance of the term, which would become emblematic of Mendelssohn's piano writing.

These "Songs Without Words" comprise about fifty lyrical pieces that greatly contributed to the composer's popularity. Their strength lies in a simple yet highly effective idea: to make the piano "sing" by assigning the melody to one hand (often the right hand) while the other provides accompaniment, pulse, and harmonic colors. They focus on legato quality, phrase breathing, dynamics, as well as the sound balance between theme and accompaniment.

During his lifetime, Mendelssohn published six volumes, followed by two more collections released posthumously. This edition offers a selection of his most beloved pieces at an intermediate, accessible, and musical level. It is suitable both for pianists finishing the first cycle and for amateurs wishing to enrich their classical repertoire with short, expressive, and immediately recognizable pieces.
