SELME R Paris: a return to the origins of a historic expertise

Before being associated with reference clarinets and saxophones, the House of Henri SELMER Paris first built its reputation around reeds: as early as 1885, Henri Selmer made this one of his initial activities. With this new range, the brand reconnects with this heritage while bringing a contemporary approach to quality control: the goal is clear, to offer musicians reliability and consistency worthy of the Selmer name, in a modern reed ready to perform as soon as the box is opened.

Who are these bass clarinet reeds for?

Designed for intermediate to professional bass clarinetists, these reeds at strength 2.5 generally fall within a balanced range: enough resistance to maintain intonation and structure the sound, while preserving comfortable response and good phrasing flexibility. They are particularly suitable for repertoires where the bass clarinet must remain both round and clear: classical, wind orchestra, chamber music, as well as jazz and contemporary music when warmth and controlled projection are sought.

Sound and design

Made from cane (Arundo donax) sourced from wild reeds selected in the South of France, these reeds aim for a consistent response, with a stable playing feel despite variations in temperature and humidity. The choice of a cane known for its high fiber content promotes better longevity and increased resistance to crushing, especially appreciated on bass clarinet where the air column often demands a homogeneous and durable reed.

In terms of sound, Selmer claims an acoustic signature characterized by density and roundness that support the low register, while maintaining warmth in the midrange and a beautiful coherence across all registers. The more precise calibration reduces differences between reeds in the same box: less "sorting," more immediately playable reeds, and increased confidence when approaching rehearsals, concerts, or recordings.

The laser marking (strength and logo) is done on the bark rather than on the table: this avoids altering the most vibration-sensitive area and improves readability once the reed is mounted on the mouthpiece. Finally, the packaging is designed as a true performance element: the kraft paper flowpack helps maintain constant humidity from the factory to the musician, while the reed holder facilitates handling and limits the risk of shocks or deformation during storage.

Recommended compatible accessories

The packaging already includes a reed holder and an individual wrapper designed to protect the tip and preserve the cane's condition. To maximize longevity, keep your reeds in their protection between sessions and avoid sudden humidity changes (too rapid drying, closed humid case, etc.).
