The S80 Range: The Henri SELMER Paris Signature at the Heart of the Repertoire

Henri SELMER Paris is among the most respected makers in the saxophone world, with a reputation built on manufacturing rigor and reliability in real-life situations: daily practice, auditions, wind orchestra, conservatory. The S80 series has established itself over decades as a benchmark in classical aesthetics, precisely because it aims for a stable response, controlled sound production, and register homogeneity that reassure as much as they inspire. The C* model is often chosen as the "balance point" of the range: open enough to sing, yet contained enough to maintain fine control of intonation and dynamics.

For Which Saxophonists and Styles?

The SELMER S80 C* mouthpiece is designed for beginner, intermediate, and advanced saxophonists seeking a reliable foundation to build embouchure, air column, and attack precision. It is an excellent choice for classical curricula (studies, competition pieces, chamber music), as well as for wind orchestras and ensembles where a clean projection, good note stability, and solid intonation are preferred over a very bright sound.

Thanks to its overall balance, it also suits versatile musicians alternating between written repertoire, section playing, and technical work: detached playing, register equality, slurs, and dynamic control from pianissimo to forte. If your priority is a very "edgy" sound typical of modern jazz, there are mouthpieces more oriented toward brightness and extreme flexibility; however, for a round, centered, and consistent aesthetic, the S80 remains a safe bet.

Sound, Response, and Design: Control in the Service of Timbre

The S80 is recognized for its feeling of stability: sound production is steady, attacks remain clean, and intonation holds naturally when support and air column are properly in place. Its square chamber contributes to a broad and homogeneous sound, with a round grain that lends itself well to timbre shaping and dynamic nuance work. The projection is controlled, without harshness, particularly appreciated in concert halls, section playing, or acoustic settings.

The C* opening (1.55 mm) is often chosen for its compromise: it facilitates reed vibration while maintaining enough resistance to work on support, attack precision, and sound stability. The 24 mm table adds to the sensation of control and precision, useful for achieving clear articulation and homogeneity across low, middle, and high registers. Made of ebonite, the mouthpiece offers a comfortable feel in the mouth and consistent response, with a naturally warm tonal material.

Recommended Compatible Accessories

To complement your alto saxophone mouthpiece, you can pair it with alto saxophone reeds suited to your level and style (a softer strength facilitates sound production, a higher strength provides more stability and resistance). To improve comfort and protect the top of the mouthpiece, a mouthpiece patch is also useful for daily use. Finally, a swab and maintenance products suitable for saxophone accessories help keep the table clean and ensure consistent response over time.
