Concept: SELMER's approach to a modern mouthpiece, balancing tradition and precision

Henri SELMER Paris is among the most respected names in the saxophone world. The brand has built its reputation on manufacturing excellence and continuous acoustic research, with particular attention to reliability under real playing conditions: intonation, control, homogeneity, and ease of sound production.

In this spirit, the Concept Soprano positions itself as a "trust" mouthpiece: a model aimed at quick handling, clear response, and a coherent sonic identity. The goal is not just to offer a beautiful tone color but an overall balance that helps the saxophonist stabilize the instrument (often demanding at the soprano) and regain consistent sensations session after session.

A mouthpiece designed to enhance control, from daily practice to the stage

The Henri SELMER Paris Concept Soprano is primarily intended for intermediate, advanced, and professional saxophonists seeking a reliable, comfortable, and easy-to-master mouthpiece. Its design promotes quick vibration start-up: a valuable asset for working on intonation, attack, and note sustain, while maintaining a "guided" breath sensation.

Regarding styles, its round, centered, and warm signature suits classical music very well (for homogeneity and control), pop, and ensembles such as brass bands or acoustic groups where clear projection without aggressiveness is desired. It can also find its place in modern jazz when the goal is clear definition, stable sound, and great consistency in dynamics.

Sound, design, and key parameters: tip opening, chamber, and table

On a saxophone mouthpiece, three elements directly influence feel and sound. First, the tip opening (gap at the tip), which determines resistance and freedom of vibration: the more open it is, the more air the mouthpiece may require and the finer the embouchure control needed. Next, the chamber (internal volume), which shapes the timbre and sense of focus. Finally, the table (reed contact area), which affects response, flexibility, and how the reed "starts" at the moment of attack.

With a 1.06 mm tip opening and a 21 mm table, the Concept Soprano aims for a very musical compromise: enough freedom to let the sound breathe, while maintaining a stable support for intonation and control (crucial points on the soprano). The round chamber enhances a full and uniform sound, with marked continuity between low, middle, and high registers.

The design, featuring a wider tip opening than a traditional soprano mouthpiece, provides immediate comfort. This ergonomics can be especially appreciated by musicians who regularly switch between alto and soprano, reducing the sensation of a "narrow mouthpiece" and facilitating embouchure stability over time.

Recommended compatible accessories

To optimize the performance of this mouthpiece, choose soprano saxophone reeds suited to your playing style: a softer strength facilitates sound production and comfort, while a firmer strength can provide more support, density, and stability. A mouthpiece swab suitable for the mouthpiece is also recommended to remove moisture after playing and preserve response. The mouthpiece comes with a mouthpiece patch, offering more stable support and better protection against wear from the teeth.
