A "Custom Shop" P-90 designed for humbucker-routed guitars
Originally developed in the Custom Shop for Hamer guitars, the Phat Cat is a true P-90 single-coil "soapbar" pickup housed under a cover in a double-coil format. The goal is simple: to capture the P-90 character (lively mids, dynamics, presence) while benefiting from easy installation on any guitar already equipped with humbuckers.
For which styles and guitarists?
In the neck position, this SPH90-1N-G excels at rich and articulate tones, perfect for country, jazz, blues, rockabilly, classic rock, and heavy rock. It is particularly suited to balanced instruments and pairs very well with rosewood, ebony, or maple fingerboards. Notable users include Tom Dumont (No Doubt), Bill Frisell, and Steve Pedulla (Thursday).
Design, set balance, and noise reduction
Thanks to its two Alnico 2 magnets, the Phat Cat offers a more sustained and softer attack, delivering a "big and fat" sound true to the P-90 spirit. For a complete setup, the neck model is RW/RP (reverse wound/reverse polarity) relative to the bridge pickup to achieve noise-free performance when both pickups are used together. This model comes with a single conductor lead and a gold finish (a nickel-plated version is also available depending on configuration).

When used together with the bridge model, the reverse-wound/reverse-polarity (RW/RP) wiring allows for noise-free operation of both pickups.
