Essential Information About the Marcus Miller P5R Bass

  • Revisited "P-style" spirit: a vintage tone immediately familiar, with a modern response designed for both studio and stage.

  • Torrefied hard maple neck + rosewood fingerboard: crisp attack, enhanced stability, and a warm feel under the fingers.

  • "Edgeless" fingerboard (rolled edges): superior playing comfort, especially pleasant during long sessions.

  • 100% passive electronics (volume/tonal control): simple, effective control, and a sound that responds directly to your right hand.

A P Redrawn by Sire in the Marcus Miller Spirit

The Marcus Miller P5R follows Sire's philosophy: offering a "Precision" format bass with a strong character, featuring manufacturing and hardware choices more ambitious than what is usually found in this category. The concept is clear: maintain the sonic foundation of a P (big low-mids, natural presence in the mix), while adding refined playability and a signature identity driven by the Marcus Miller collaboration.

Who Is It For, and What Styles?

Thanks to its passive approach and ergonomic design, the P5R suits both the serious beginner bassist looking for a reliable and evolving instrument, and the intermediate player who wants a workhorse bass capable of clean recording without struggling with EQ. In terms of styles, it excels in pop, rock, soul, R&B, funk (for pick or finger lines with body), and anything requiring clear lows and a solid foundation.

The C-Shape neck profile and rolled-edge fingerboard promote smooth playing, whether your left hand is "light touch" or more energetic. This is typically the kind of bass that encourages consistency: attack, dynamics, and placement stand out immediately.

A Precision Sound with Precise and Musical Response

The acoustic base rests on a North American alder body, a tonewood known for its balance: full lows, present mids, and never harsh highs. On a P-style bass, this balance is essential as it determines how the instrument "sits" in the mix, especially in a band setting.

The torrefied hard maple neck provides a rigid feel and a clear response to attack, while the rosewood fingerboard adds a touch of roundness and softness in the upper spectrum. The result: a solid and articulated low end, with mids that remain singing-ideal for finger grooves and pick lines.

The Marcus Vintage Fat-Precision Revolution Set pickups are designed to respect the "P" DNA: ample lows, generous low-mids, and that presence allowing the bass to cut through a mix without pushing volume. The passive circuit (volume, tone) maintains a very organic behavior: opening the tone control increases attack and definition; closing it shifts toward a muffled timbre, very effective for soul, reggae, or vintage atmospheres.
