A V7 Vintage Designed for Expressive Playing, in the Marcus Tradition
The V7 Vintage adopts the "Jazz type" codes that have marked Marcus Miller's universe: familiar ergonomics, precise attack, and great versatility. In the FL (fretless) version, it retains this effective base while adding a more vocal and nuanced dimension, perfect for exploring subtle playing rich in vibrato and slides, without losing the definition needed in a band or studio setting.
For Which Bassists and Styles?
This Marcus Miller V7 Vintage Alder-4 FL is mainly aimed at intermediate to advanced bassists (and highly motivated beginners) who want to work on intonation, placement, and expression. It is particularly comfortable in jazz, fusion, neo-soul, funk, and pop. The passive mode reassures with more traditional sounds, while the active mode provides extra headroom and sculpting for modern contexts.
The Sound
The alder body promotes a very musical balance: round lows, present mids, and soft highs, an ideal foundation for the "singing" signature of a fretless. The Marcus Vintage-J Revolution pickups deliver a jazz-typical grain, articulated and precise, with excellent right-hand nuance response. The Marcus Heritage-3 preamp takes versatility further: lows for foundation, highs for attack, and especially a Middle / Middle Frequency control (dual potentiometer) to precisely position the bass in the mix. The mini toggle Active / Passive allows switching from an organic, direct response to a more powerful, refined sound ready for the stage.
Recommended Compatible Accessories
To respect the long scale 34" / 864 mm scale length, choose 4-string long scale bass strings. On a fretless, flatwound or tapewound gauges can offer a softer touch and rounder tone. A strap and an instrument jack cable complete the setup effectively for rehearsals and gigs.
