Esther, Jean Racine's penultimate tragedy, stands at the crossroads of classical theatre and music serving the text. Written for the "Demoiselles" of the Maison Royale de Saint-Cyr, founded at the initiative of Madame de Maintenon, the work was premiered before a court audience at the 1689 carnival, inaugurating a brief tradition of theatre with musical interludes within the institution. The interludes by Jean-Baptiste Moreau employ a three-part instrumental ensemble (prelude, ouverture, entracte) and alternate choir, solos, and vocal ensembles in a sound dramaturgy that highlights the action and declamation.
