What DeEss Is For
DeEss is a de-essing plugin designed to effectively reduce sibilance and harsh high-frequency excess ("s", "ch", "t" sounds) on vocals, but also on sources like acoustic guitars, overheads, hi-hats, or certain bright synths. Where a dynamic EQ or compressor might sometimes squash the upper spectrum, DeEss aims for a more selective action to preserve clarity and intelligibility without dulling the signal.
Thanks to its relative threshold approach, the behavior remains consistent on very dynamic performances: soft passages are treated with as much care as loud ones. This is a major advantage in recording, voice editing (podcast, voice-over, singing), and mixing when a stable result is desired even after gain changes in the chain.

Precise sidechain filtering triggering
The Filters section limits the frequency range that triggers the de-esser. By adjusting the cutoff frequencies of the high-pass and low-pass filters (independent and switchable), you precisely define the area that should activate the reduction. Result: the effect applies only when unwanted frequency content appears, avoiding reactions to off-target elements.
Relative threshold: consistent de-essing even if the level changes
Unlike classic de-essers based on an absolute threshold, DeEss uses a "relative" threshold: the trigger point is defined relative to the signal intensity. In practice, this means de-essing remains effective even if you increase upstream gain (preamp, clip gain, saturation, prior compressor) or if the performance alternates between very soft phrases and powerful choruses. You spend less time "recalibrating" the plugin and more time finalizing the tone.
Visual monitoring: FFT and compression history
For quick and reliable adjustment, DeEss combines a sidechain FFT display and a compression history graph showing the pre-filter waveform. Compressed areas are highlighted by color coding: bright yellow for strong de-essing, pale yellow for light de-essing, and gray when the signal is unmodified. This visualization helps spot events difficult to track on a spectrum alone and precisely dose the amount of reduction.
Advanced modes: split, broadband, and character control
Advanced parameters open powerful and flexible de-essing modes. The Blend control allows mixing the split behavior and broadband sidechaining: in split mode, attenuation affects only the band defined by the filters; moving toward broadband mode applies attenuation equally across the entire signal. This lets you choose between surgical correction and broader control of harshness.
The Brighten parameter boosts high frequencies alongside de-essing to avoid a "veil" effect after heavy reduction, useful for keeping a present and modern vocal. Lookahead adds slight latency to anticipate sibilant events and improve reaction accuracy. Finally, oversampling can be enabled to reduce aliasing introduced by compression and improve quality; the applied oversampling depends automatically on the project's sample rate.
Listening, measurement, and workflow comfort
DeEss facilitates ear-based adjustment with listening options: audition of sidechain filters or the affected signal, and auto-listen that switches to filter or compressor audition when you change parameters. On the monitoring side, output metering includes high-level and clipping warnings, as well as instant gain reduction measurement. An integrated help system and presets designed for different voice and instrument types speed up the learning curve.
