What SSL HF Compressor Is For

SSL HF Compressor is a specialized compression plug-in that acts only on the high frequencies. Its goal is simple: to tame aggressiveness, brittleness, or sibilance that can accumulate in a mix, while preserving energy and clarity. Whereas a de-esser or dynamic EQ often targets a specific area, this processing behaves like a global smoothing of the upper spectrum, ideal for regaining a more "analog" feel and a less fatiguing listening experience.

It is particularly effective on drum buses (overly harsh cymbals, too bright snare), vocals (sibilance and excessive brightness), acoustic guitars (too metallic attacks), synths rich in highs, or on the mix bus when the upper end becomes sharp at high levels.

Main Features

A DSP circuit designed to "round off" the upper spectrum

The heart of SSL HF Compressor relies on a unique DSP circuit that compresses only the high frequencies. The result is an attenuation of the upper end reminiscent of how tape can soften the high spectrum: less harshness, more cohesion, and highs that remain present but better controlled. The plug-in is modeled from real measurements of analog circuits, in collaboration with the original designers, to preserve the expected character and musical response.

Assumed simplicity, fast results

To speed up decision-making, some typical compressor parameters have been fixed by design: attack, release, and ratio are optimized to offer maximum transparency. This approach avoids bad settings and promotes consistent control, whether for light polishing on a bus or a more pronounced action on an aggressive track.

Auto Gain and mix: hassle-free parallel processing

The Auto Gain function automatically adds make-up gain on the compressed frequencies. You can thus push the processing and hear more of the compressor's envelope while maintaining a stable level sensation. This is especially effective on very transient sources like drums: you control harshness while preserving sharp and musical high transients.

The mix parameter allows instant parallel processing: perfect for dosing the smoothing of highs without losing original vitality, or for "gluing" a bus without weighing down the whole mix.

Visualization, targeted listening, and performance

The tricolor LED intuitively indicates compression intensity, while the main graph displays the input signal and compression over time, allowing quick adjustments by ear and eye. The listening function lets you isolate the compressed and removed frequencies, useful for precisely checking what is being taken out and adjusting the amount in context.

Finally, the Eco mode reduces latency and CPU usage, an asset for real-time monitoring and recording. The interface also includes integrated graphical help and a preset selection designed to get you started quickly on the most common use cases.
