A New Generation of the Beta Series: The "Tube" Spirit in Pedal Format
With the BETA-V, SolidGoldFX revisits the architecture of its Beta series to go beyond a simple "overdrive grain": this is a true bass preamp approach, designed to reproduce what bassists love about vintage big heads and stacks. That feeling of a rounded signal, natural compression, and responsiveness that makes a note sustain, snap, and thicken without becoming muddy.
The idea is simple: keep the practicality of a modern rig (lightweight, reliable, quick to set up) while bringing back the mojo and texture of tube setups like a "working big amp." The BETA-V thus stands as a broader and more flexible version of the Beta spirit, with more filtering options and a reworked drive suitable for both low-gain settings and thicker saturations.
Who Is the SolidGoldFX BETA-V For?
The BETA-V targets both the beginner bassist looking for a first true "premium" preamp sound and the experienced musician wanting a characterful tool for studio and stage. It excels whenever you need to add presence and density without losing foundation in the low end.
Style-wise, it covers a wide range: rock and punk for a more biting attack, blues and classic rock for an organic and dynamic drive, as well as stoner and garage for thicker textures. Thanks to its post-gain EQ and LPF filter, it can also be dialed in for very deep dub and reggae registers, maintaining a massive and controlled low end.
On a pedalboard, it can serve as an always-on preamp (tone shaper) or as a saturated channel to engage. In the studio, it's an excellent way to add that "breathing amp" vibe to a too-clean take while retaining control over the mids.
Controls, Filtering, and Design: Simple to Adjust, Rich to Exploit
The BETA-V was designed to quickly get "the right sound" while offering truly useful controls. The Drive knob manages the amount of grit, from a light grain to a warm and beefy overdrive. The Volume adjusts the output level (ideal for balancing clean and drive sounds or pushing an amp's input).
The core of the tonal shaping relies on two complementary elements. First, the LPF (low-pass filter) paired with a 3-position frequency switch : at 0, the pedal remains more open and transparent; at 1, the mids are boosted to cut better in a rock mix; at 2, the mids are scooped for a wider, rounder feel with generous lows. Then, the 2-band active post-gain EQ (bass and treble) lets you adjust the spectrum after saturation, with a flat center: handy to regain attack, tame excessive brightness, or thicken the low end without turning the drive into "mush."
Bypass is handled via True Bypass switching, and ergonomics are optimized for pedalboards with top-mounted jacks and a soft-touch footswitch that's pleasant in live use.
The Sound
The SolidGoldFX BETA-V delivers an organic and musical bass saturation, with that "amp" character that slightly compresses, softens edges, and adds harmonic depth. At low gain, it brings warmth and a feeling of a more alive signal, ideal for adding thickness to a very clean modern bass. Increasing the drive yields a fat, round, and percussive overdrive capable of sharper attacks, like a supercharged rock tone.
The LPF filter and post-gain EQ allow you to shift from a snappy and aggressive sound (more presence, more attack) to a deep and massive tone (heavy lows, controlled highs) without losing control. The result: a pedal that responds well to playing dynamics, right-hand nuances, and bass volume, helping the bass find its place whether you play with a pick or fingers.

Questions frequently asked
Does the SolidGoldFX BETA-V operate on 9 V or 18 V?
The required power supply accepts a DC voltage from 9 to 18 V. This range allows integration with compatible pedalboard power supplies.
How does the LPF Freq selector 0 / 1 / 2 work?
At position 0, no low-pass filter is applied. Position 1 boosts the mids, while position 2 scoops the mids for a wider sound.
Can this pedal be used as a bass preamp that is always on?
The BETA-V can be used as a permanent preamp to thicken an electric bass signal. The Drive adds a slight grit to a stronger overdrive, then the active 2-band EQ operates after gain. The bass and treble controls have a flat center.
What type of saturation does the BETA-V offer for rock and punk?
Its analog circuit delivers a warm and punchy bass overdrive. The Drive control emphasizes the attack, while LPF mode 1 highlights the mids to cut through a rock mix.
Is the connectivity suitable for a compact pedalboard?
The jacks are mounted on the top of the enclosure, which makes wiring on a pedalboard easier. The True Bypass switching and soft-touch footswitch complete this design.
