The spirit of the Tone Bender Mk II, revisited for today's pedalboards
The SolidGoldFX Fuzzbox follows directly in the footsteps of the Tone Bender Mk II, a fuzz that helped shape the sound of British rock in the 1960s and 70s. Its blend of generous sustain, snarling mids and abrasive texture left its mark on the riffs and solos of guitarists such as Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck and Mick Ronson.
Rather than attempting to reproduce the quirks of a vintage unit identically, SolidGoldFX captures the soul of this legendary circuit and adapts it for modern use. The low-gain silicon transistors preserve the sought-after lively, organic character while providing a more consistent response and better integration within a contemporary effects chain.
An expressive fuzz for vintage riffs, abrasive leads and wild textures
The Fuzzbox is aimed at guitarists who want to recapture the character of great British fuzzes without sacrificing ease of use. It will suit both amateur musicians already familiar with effect pedals and professionals looking for a strongly defined fuzz character.
It excels in muscular blues rock, garage rock, classic rock, psychedelia, stoner and alternative styles. Used with a guitar equipped with single-coil pickups, it reveals a sharp, lively attack; with humbuckers, it gains thickness and sustain for massive solos. Its natural cleanup via the guitar's volume control also makes it an excellent tool for moving from a raspy crunch to a full fuzz without touching the pedal.
Thanks to its Modern mode and top-mounted connections, it easily fits onto a compact pedalboard. It can become the main fuzz in a vintage setup or add a wilder color in front of an already driven amplifier.
Bias, Sag and two modes for shaping the fuzz response
The SolidGoldFX Fuzzbox features Volume and Fuzz controls for adjusting the output level and the quantity of saturation, then goes significantly further with its character controls. The Bias knob affects the operating point of the third transistor. It allows you to fine-tune the texture, compression, attack and note response, from a broad, singing sound to a tighter, more lively response.
The Sag control simulates the gradual weakening of a battery. By reducing the internal voltage, it adds softer compression, a less pronounced attack and spongier sounds. Set more open, it delivers more punch, presence and firmness instead.
The Vintage/Modern mini-selector adapts the pedal's response to your setup. Vintage mode favors a raw, direct interaction faithful to the spirit of the earliest Tone Bender fuzzes. Modern mode reinforces the low end, offers a rounder response and makes it easier to use with a wah-wah, a buffer or other pedals placed before the Fuzzbox.
The soft-touch footswitch controls a relay-based true bypass, preserving the signal when the effect is disengaged. The top-mounted inputs and outputs simplify cabling on a crowded pedalboard.
The sound
The Fuzzbox delivers a thick, grainy and highly musical fuzz, with the typically rugged tone of great British rock productions. Chords retain excellent definition, while single notes bloom into a dense sustain saturated with harmonics and exceptionally expressive.
Its real strength lies in its dynamics. It responds vividly to picking intensity, pickup selection and the guitar's volume. A light attack brings out a fuzzy, articulate crunch; dig in harder and the pedal transforms into a wall of roaring fuzz. With the Bias and Sag controls, it can remain open and imposing or become more compressed, starved and textured—ideal for giving a riff or solo a distinctive signature.
