An "Old School" Evolution by SolidGoldFX

At SolidGoldFX, the envelope filter is familiar territory: the Supa Funk builds on the brand's previous funk-focused pedals, leveraging their learnings. The idea is simple: to recapture the groove and musicality of vintage envelope filters while offering a modern refinement (more effective controls, wider range, better trigger management) to avoid the sometimes temperamental flaws of vintage circuits. The result: a pedal designed to closely follow your playing, with an effect that "breathes" and highlights the attack.

Who Is It For, and Which Styles?

The Solid Gold FX Supa Funk is aimed at guitarists, bassists, and keyboard/synth enthusiasts who want to integrate a dynamic auto-wah into their sound without using a foot-controlled wah pedal. It excels in funk, of course, but also fits perfectly in disco, neo-soul, jam, hip-hop (filtered textures), dub, and even rock for tighter rhythmic parts.

Live, it brings immediate and clear movement in the mix, especially on chicken-picking and pick-driven riffs. In the studio, it becomes a sound design tool: you can create subtle sweeps, pronounced effects, or even fixed filters for lo-fi colors and "cocked-wah" timbres.

Controls, Modes, and Ergonomics: Everything to Dial in the Groove

The Supa Funk offers a straightforward interface with 5 potentiometers and a switch, designed to cover a wide palette without getting lost in menus. Depth adjusts the filter movement amplitude: low for subtle animation, high for a very expressive effect. Freq sets the filter's working range: left for thicker, dubby textures; right for a brighter, more cutting sound.

The Sens control plays a key role: it adjusts both the ease of triggering and the envelope behavior (responsiveness and duration). Turning it up makes the effect trigger more easily and stay more open; turning it down tightens the behavior for shorter, more controlled attacks. A highlight: setting Sens fully left disables the envelope and turns the pedal into a static filter controlled by Freq (perfect for constant filtered textures).

The Color knob introduces and blends a second low-pass filter: left yields a cleaner, snappier sound; right adds warmth, "throatiness," and thickness. Finally, Level adjusts the output volume to maintain level balance or push the amp/next stages. The Direction switch lets you choose the sweep direction: forward for classic, immediate sounds; reverse for more surprising and modern movements.

Sound Character

The Supa Funk stands out with an organic character and a highly sensitive attack response: the harder you play, the more the effect opens and expresses itself. Its fully analog audio path contributes to a smooth and fluid feel without losing playing articulation. Thanks to the Freq + Color duo, you can go from tight, percussive funk to richer, almost "vocal" sweeps with a broader low-end foundation. At moderate settings, it remains musical and elegant; at extreme settings, it becomes a very expressive effects machine, ideal for standout passages and bold textures.
