What smart:comp 2 is for
smart:comp 2 is a software compressor designed to master dynamics with great precision while maintaining a transparency that is hard to achieve with classic compression. It is suitable for modern mixing (vocals, drums, bass, guitars, synths) as well as bus processing (drum bus, vocal bus, instrument bus) and even full mix processing when you seek fine control without unwanted pumping effects. Thanks to its spectro-dynamic approach, it also helps stabilize tonal balance when an instrument's dynamics cause its color to vary over time.
Main features
Spectral compression: "shaping" dynamics
At the heart of smart:comp 2, spectral compression continuously works across a large number of frequency bands. The goal is to achieve a cleaner and more readable result by preventing any spectral region from dominating at the slightest energy peak. This method favors compression perceived as more transparent, as it limits typical side effects (overall squashing, veil, loss of attack) often associated with broadband compressors.
Intelligent auto-parameterization: fast, consistent, musical
The plug-in offers a simple-to-activate automatic parametrization designed to speed up workflow: you get a relevant starting point based on the source. Profiles oriented towards "single tracks" facilitate choosing an appropriate behavior (for example, for vocals, kick, bass, or synths), while remaining flexible enough to fine-tune the feel afterward: tighter, softer, punchier, or more subtle.
Frequency-dependent ducking: more space, fewer conflicts
smart:comp 2 goes beyond traditional ducking by offering frequency-dependent ducking. Instead of lowering the entire signal whenever the sidechain is triggered, it identifies the spectral overlap zones between the input and sidechain and automatically corrects them. The result: the sidechain (vocals, kick, snare, lead, etc.) gets exactly the space it needs, with a clearer mix and less audible compression.
Sound design: free-form transfer curve and customizable envelopes
For producers who want to sculpt a signature, smart:comp 2 includes a free-form transfer curve that goes beyond usual ratios and knee settings. You can target complex goals such as "parallel" compression in spirit, or even more selective behaviors (for example, accentuating certain signal levels instead of just reducing them). Additionally, you can draw the temporal behavior of attack and release, turning the compressor into a true playground for creating punchier transients, more stable sustains, or controlled rhythmic movements.
Character and control: Color, Style, M/S, and useful automation
The Color and Style dials allow adjusting the treatment's personality, from the most neutral compression to a more marked and expressive feel. For precise mixing, the plug-in also offers features expected in advanced production: auto output gain for level-matched comparison, mid/side processing to work on center and sides, and options like input level riding to stabilize input level variations. Support for surround also opens the door to immersive projects.

Questions frequently asked
Is smart:comp 2 compatible with Mac Apple Silicon and Windows?
Compatibility is announced for macOS with native Apple Silicon support, as well as for Windows. A memory requirement of 4 GB is indicated for both Mac and Windows.
How does frequency-dependent ducking work with a sidechain?
Frequency-dependent ducking targets the overlapping spectral areas between the processed signal and the sidechain. Only the conflicting frequencies are corrected rather than the entire signal.
Can this compressor be used on a bus or the full mix?
Spectral compression is designed for bus processing, particularly for drums, vocals, or instruments, as well as for a full mix. Its action spread across many frequency bands limits imbalances caused by energy peaks. Mid/side functions allow separate processing of the center and sides.
Which settings allow modification of the compression character?
The Color and Style dials adjust the personality of the processing, from a neutral compression to a more expressive behavior. A free-form transfer curve also enables defining behaviors beyond traditional ratio and knee settings.
Are the attack and release times customizable?
Customizable envelopes allow shaping the temporal behavior of attack and release.
