What Radiator 5 Is For

Radiator 5 is an effect plug-in designed to add tube drive, analog character, and harmonic thickness within your DAW. It is used as a colored input channel strip to transform clean sources into livelier and denser takes: drums (kick, snare, drum bus), bass, guitars, keyboards, vocals, or even on an instrument bus to create a "vintage" glue.

Its main purpose is to provide a distinctive sonic signature: organic saturation, a slightly rough grain, and that little "old school console" vibe that helps an element sit in the mix. It's also an excellent sound design tool to dirty up, thicken, and musically emphasize the midrange.

Main Features

A Faithful Emulation of a Motown Classic

Radiator 5 draws inspiration from the famous Altec 1567A, a rack-mounted tube mixer known for its strong sonic personality. Expect a deliberately colored texture, with a tactile feel and era-specific presence, perfect for achieving a vintage aesthetic on modern productions.

Two Gain Stages for Controlled Drive

The plug-in offers two distinct amplification sections (input and output). This approach allows you to push the input to generate saturation and harmonics, then adjust the output to maintain a consistent level without losing the character achieved. The result: you can go from subtle thickening to more pronounced distortion while keeping level control in the chain.

Transformers and Mic/Line Switching

Thanks to the Mic/Line switch, Radiator 5 lets you load the transformers in two different ways to obtain distinct colors. This is a quick lever to vary response, density, and punch sensation depending on the source and the track's role in the mix.

Two-Knob EQ: Fast, Effective, Musical

The built-in equalizer embraces the minimalist spirit of the original hardware: few controls but direct results. Ideal for enhancing attack, taming harshness, or highlighting a useful frequency range without over-processing. In a mixing workflow, it's a quick solution to shape timbre while preserving the overall "console" character.

Grain and Realism Down to the Details

Like vintage hardware, Radiator 5 does not aim for transparency: it introduces a more "alive" sonic signature, with a gritty edge and analog realism. On drums, it enhances impact and cohesion perception; on bass, it helps better articulate the midrange playing; on a bus, it can add harmonic glue reminiscent of analog summing.
