Historical Context and Positioning Within the Range

The principle of Rims-type suspensions has established itself as a simple and effective solution to allow the shell to vibrate more freely than with a direct mount. This version with a round plate fits into a reliable and practical approach, particularly suited for 6-lug toms, with a mounting that prioritizes stability and isolation.

Who This Drum/Instrument Is For

This suspension is aimed at beginner to advanced drummers who want to improve the behavior of their 14-inch tom without changing the shell. It is suitable for rehearsals, studio, and stage, especially for styles where a more open and singing tom is desired: rock, pop, funk, fusion, metal, or contemporary music. It is also a good choice for setups where one wants to limit interference and achieve better clarity of strokes.

Features and Innovations

Thanks to its 4 suspension points, this Rims distributes the effort across several lugs, which helps maintain more consistent tuning and avoids concentrating stress on only two points. The isolation rubbers play a key role: they dampen some of the vibrations transmitted to the mount and reduce mechanical noise. The plate is designed with precise dimensions (spacing, hole diameter) for coherent mounting, with recommended compatibility with Sparedrum TB4 shells. Note: the support shell is not included, so you need to provide the corresponding mounting element for your setup.

Sound

On an acoustic drum kit, the suspension directly influences how the shell "breathes." By limiting rigid contact between the tom and the hardware, you generally get more sustain and a sensation of a freer tom, with better exploited resonance. The projection can seem more natural, and the attack often gains clarity because the shell is less constrained by the mounting point.

The exact benefit depends on the wood and construction of the tom: a maple shell tends to retain its warmth and balance while opening up more, whereas a birch shell may emphasize a sharper attack and more direct projection. In all cases, the goal remains the same: preserve the shell's vibration and improve the musicality of the 14-inch tom, especially at moderate playing volumes as well as amplified situations.
