A '70s-inspired Jazz Bass, revisited in an active version
This Classic Vibe Active '70s Jazz Bass draws inspiration from the iconic basses that defined the funk sounds of the 1970s: precise attack, present mids, and instantly recognizable aesthetics. The visual recipe stays true to the era with a bound fretboard, large block inlays, a matching headstock, and a vintage-tinted neck finish. A special feature of this FSR version is that it retains the old-school vibe while adding active electronics to gain control, output level, and versatility, both on stage and in the studio.
For whom and for which styles? A versatile bass for modern groove with vintage DNA
With its Jazz Bass format and active/passive electronics, this model is aimed at ambitious beginners as well as intermediate players who want an easy-to-handle instrument capable of covering many styles. The nut width of 38.1 mm / 1.5" promotes a fast and comfortable left hand, especially appreciated for fingerstyle playing, slap, or syncopated lines.
Style-wise, it naturally excels in funk, disco, pop, rock, and R&B. In passive mode, you get a more traditional character, ideal for dense mixes. In active mode, you gain firmer lows and more present highs to stand out in the band or to enhance pick playing precision.
A clean and punchy Jazz Bass tone: noiseless, active, and mix-ready
The pair of Fender Designed Alnico Noiseless Jazz Bass pickups is designed to deliver the snap and definition typical of a Jazz Bass while drastically reducing unwanted noise. The result: a more serene sound in real conditions (stage lighting, studios, pedals), with clear lows and articulated mids, perfect for crafting a readable bass line.
The active section relies on a 9 V preamp offering a highly usable palette: Master Volume to control output level, Pan (blend) to balance neck and bridge pickups, Treble/Bass Boost to enhance the extremes, and Master Tone to smooth the high end when seeking a more vintage vibe. The 2-position mini toggle switch allows switching between active and passive: handy for instantly changing tonal personality or returning to a more organic and direct response.
The craftsmanship and hardware also contribute to the feel of sustain and projection. The poplar body provides a pleasant balance: present lows without heaviness and a sufficiently sharp attack for rhythmic playing. The HiMass bridge promotes better vibration transfer, with solid sustain and appreciable stability, especially when playing hard or seeking tight lows. Finally, the maple neck with a "C" profile, combined with the 241 mm / 9.5" radius fretboard and Narrow Tall frets, offers an effective compromise between modern comfort and classic feel: clean notes, controlled bends, and precise positioning across the entire fingerboard.
Recommended compatible accessories
To get the most out of the active electronics, have a spare 9 V battery (standard size) on hand to avoid any surprises during rehearsals or gigs. For routine maintenance, you can also opt for a nickel plated steel string set in .045-.105 gauges, exactly in line with the original setup, to maintain the same balance of tension and brightness.
