What Steinberg Retrologue 2 Is For

Steinberg Retrologue 2 is a virtual synthesizer plug-in designed to create modern "analog" sounds: deep basses, cutting leads, wide pads, rhythmic sequences, and transition effects. Thanks to its performance-oriented architecture (quick controls, MIDI learn, arpeggiator) and modulation tools, it adapts equally well to electronic productions (EDM, techno, house, synthwave) as well as pop, rock arrangements and sound design for visuals. In the studio, it is used to build expressive and mix-ready patches; live, it facilitates variations (macro controls, mod wheel) and sound movement without complicating your setup.

Main Features

A versatile virtual analog engine

The sound generation relies on 3 main oscillators offering several modes (Single, Sync, Cross, XOR, Multi), complemented by a sub-oscillator, a noise generator, and a ring modulator. This combination allows you to move from a simple and effective sound (punchy mono bass) to more complex timbres (aggressive harmonics, thick textures, metallic or digital sounds) while maintaining a classic synth workflow.

The Multi mode adds width and movement: each oscillator can stack up to 8 detunable voices for massive unisons, supersaws, and very dense pads, ideal for cinematic intros, wide choruses, or leads that "fill" the spectrum.

Filters, saturation, and sound dynamics

Retrologue 2 offers 24 filter types including LP, HP, BP, BR, as well as morphable and asymmetric variants. You can create smooth and organic sweeps or, conversely, more pronounced movements for modern and expressive sounds. To enhance character, the filter distortion adds coloration directly in the synthesis chain with 6 types: Tube, Clip, Bit Reduction, Rate, Rate KF, Off. This stage is ideal for adding presence to a bass, thickening a lead, or dirtying a sequence in a controlled way.

Detailed modulations, immediate control

The expressive core of the synth relies on 3 envelopes (Amp, Filter, Env3) with ADSR or bipolar structure, and velocity scaling for truly playable patches. For movement, you have 4 LFOs (2 mono, 2 polyphonic) with waveform selection, shape and phase adjustment, tempo and rhythm synchronization, random start, fade-in, retrigger, and pitch tracking.

To connect everything, the 16-slot modulation matrix allows free assignment of sources and destinations, adjustment of offset/modulator/depth, and even signal routing via buses. The result: you can design lively sounds (progressive vibrato, animated filter, modulated panning, timbre variations) while keeping a clear and reproducible logic.

Creative arpeggiator and controllable sequences

The integrated arpeggiator covers classic and advanced uses: step modes, chords, up/down, random, and direct, with velocity modes (original, controller, hybrid). The length can go up to 32 steps, with pitch selection, legato, and step transposition. For precise control from your DAW or controller, controller lanes (MIDI CC 110 to 112) feature a dedicated modulation path, useful for automating rhythmic and expressive variations throughout the track.

Integrated effects rack: from raw patch to final sound

Retrologue 2 includes a 6-insert serial effects rack to finalize the sound without breaking the creative flow: resonator (14 filter shapes and 3 LFOs), phaser, modulation effects (chorus, flanger, ensemble), delay (stereo/cross/ping-pong), reverb with multiband control and chorus, and 4-band EQ with parametric mids plus shelving high-pass and low-pass filters. This is a major asset for quickly obtaining a mix-ready sound, whether thickening a pad, opening the space of a lead, or rhythmically enhancing a sequence.

Finally, 8 freely assignable quick controls speed up performance and automation. MIDI learn and definable modulation wheel ranges allow adapting patch behavior to your playing and gear, both in the studio and on stage. The plug-in supports the HALion technology platform.
