A Direct Descendant of the StingRay, a Modernized Classic
Following the line of iconic basses that appeared in the late 1970s, the Ray4 adopts the hallmarks that made the StingRay successful: an immediately identifiable shape, active electronics, and a powerful humbucker designed to cut through in a band. Available in many finishes, this Vintage Sunburst satin version aims for a timeless style while retaining the efficiency and simplicity of an instrument made for playing, rehearsing, and performing on stage.
Who Is It For, and What Styles?
The Sterling Ray4 is aimed both at beginners who want to start with a serious bass and intermediate bassists looking for a reliable and versatile instrument. Its character is particularly suited to funk (slap), rock, pop, and contemporary music where a present, clear, and dynamic bass is expected. Thanks to the 2-band EQ, you can easily switch from a round, deep tone to a more punchy attack.
The Sound
The core of the sound comes from the ceramic humbucker in the bridge position, known for its fast response and generous output level: ideal for defined lines and lows that remain clear. The active electronics and controls for Volume plus 2-band EQ allow you to shape the tone in one move, enhancing the low end or gaining presence. The basswood body contributes to a balanced output, while the maple neck and fingerboard promote clarity and attack, highly appreciated for pick playing and percussive styles.
Recommended Compatible Accessories
To maintain the original gauge and feel, you can choose the factory-installed string set: Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky Bass (CEB 2833).
