Summary of This Method

This volume 6 of the Suzuki Viola School is aimed at violists who wish to take a step forward, both technically and musically. The method emphasizes accuracy and sound quality through Tonalization and Intonation Exercises (S. Suzuki), then develops left-hand stability with Exercises in Octaves and Fifths (D. Preucil) and Position Etudes (S. Suzuki). To anchor fingerboard landmarks throughout, you will also find Chromatic Scale Exercises (D. Preucil) as well as Three-Octave Scales and Arpeggios in D Major and D Minor (D. Preucil), particularly useful for preparing auditions and exams.

On the repertoire side, the selection alternates character pieces and major classical works to work on articulation, phrasing, and style. Notably included are La Folia (M. Marais/arr. D. Preucil) for Baroque elegance, Allegro (G.H. Fiocco) for energy and rhythmic precision, as well as excerpts from Bach such as the Suite in G Major from Suite in G Major for Violoncello, BWV 1007 (Allemande, Minuet I, Minuet II) (J.S. Bach) and Arioso, Sinfonia for Oboe, Violin, Viola, Basso Continuo, Ich Steh mit einen Fuss im Grabe, BWV 156 (J.S. Bach), ideal for refining legato and line shaping. The volume also offers Adagio and Rondo in D (Adagio, Rondo) (W.A. Mozart), Country Dances (L. van Beethoven), Hungarian Dance No. 5 (J. Brahms), as well as concerto work with Concerto for Two Violins, Violin II arranged for Viola, BWV 1043 (1st Movement: Vivace) (J.S. Bach) and Concerto in C Minor (I. Allegro molto ma maestoso, II. Adagio molto espressivo) (J.C. Bach/arr. Casadesus). An excellent choice to enrich your viola repertoire while effectively structuring technical progression.
