Supro 64 Super

Historical Context and Positioning in the Range

The Supro '64 Super follows the tradition of small American combos that shaped the sound of sixties recordings: a compact format, modest power, and an all-tube circuit designed to sing as soon as you push the volume. This reissue embraces the original's "no-frills" approach, with a clear philosophy: fewer components, more feel, more character. Within the lineup, it stands as an ultra-direct tube guitar amp focused on authenticity, for those seeking the spontaneity of a vintage circuit and the musicality of natural overdrive.

Who This Amp Is For

This combo is aimed at guitarists from motivated beginners to experienced players looking for a simple, inspiring, and easy-to-use amp. With its 5W power, it excels in home studio, recording, and home playing environments: you can exploit the break-up zone without needing excessive volume. It suits styles where attack and tone matter as much as intonation: blues, vintage rock, garage, americana, indie, and anything that loves organic sounds. In rehearsals, it shines if the overall volume stays reasonable or if you rely on mic'ing and PA reinforcement.

Features and Innovations

Here, everything is intentional: a single Volume knob, no EQ, no menus, no built-in effects. This absence of tone controls is not a limitation but a design choice that favors a short signal path and a more "raw" feel. The result: you shape the sound mainly with your playing, the guitar's volume knob, and your pedals. The 12AX7 -based preamp drives directly into a Class A power stage with a 6V6 : an ideal architecture for a lively clean tone at low volume, then a snappy crunch, and finally a harmonically rich overdrive when you open up the volume further.

The Sound

The Supro '64 Super is a tube guitar amp with a very expressive character: a clear attack, natural progressive compression, and that vintage grain that thickens as the volume rises. In clean mode, it delivers a warm and detailed clear tone, with a nice midrange presence that puts the guitar forward in a mix. When the amp starts to saturate, the crunch remains articulate, with a gritty and musical texture, perfect for old-school riffs and leads. The 6V6 provides a typically American roundness and smoothness, while the 8-inch Jensen C8R favors a fast response and a very "studio-friendly" sound, particularly pleasant for mic'd recordings. This is the kind of amp that rewards nuance: light picking, pick attack, guitar volume control... everything is heard, everything transforms.
