Historical Context and Positioning in the Range

Octobans are among TAMA's iconic original instruments. Designed to extend the kit beyond traditional toms, they have been adopted by many drummers with progressive and exploratory playing styles, including Billy Cobham, Simon Phillips, Stewart Copeland, Bill Bruford, Mike Portnoy, and Tim Alexander. Their philosophy is simple and effective: rather than stacking toms of different diameters, a "percussion keyboard" is built by playing with the length of the shells. This approach places the Octoban at the crossroads between an additional tom, a percussive effect, and a melodic instrument, with an immediately recognizable identity in a mix.

Who This Drum/Instrument Is For

This Octoban is aimed at intermediate to expert drummers looking to enrich their set with colors more precise than those of a standard tom. It is particularly relevant for aesthetics where the drum interacts with harmonic lines or repetitive patterns: progressive rock, fusion, instrumental music, modern pop, film scores, as well as more "sound design" contexts (breakdowns, transitions, calls, responses, and punctuations). In the studio, it becomes a formidable tool for creating more readable and melodic tom phrases while maintaining a very percussive energy.

Features and Innovations

The particularity of an Octoban lies in its tuning concept: with a fixed diameter of 6 inches, the pitch mainly differs by the shell length. Here, the depth of 23 1/2 inches (600 mm) naturally fits into a lower tessitura logic within a set of Octobans. The result is a more settled, fuller note, very useful for constructing coherent melodic descents or deeper calls. The 6-inch shells can be tuned melodically and come in sets oriented towards low or high pitches, which facilitates creating a dedicated set or integrating into an existing acoustic kit. Note: this model is supplied without stand, giving you the freedom to choose the mounting and placement best suited to your setup (rack, tom arm, clamp, or dedicated stand).

Sound Characteristics

With its small diameter and long shell, the Octoban produces a very different response from a classic tom: the attack is quick, the note is clear, and the projection is excellent. The 6-inch size brings a "pointed" and readable quality, while the 600 mm length favors a lower pitch and a more stabilized note sensation, ideal for outlining a rhythmic-melodic line without muddying the rest of the kit.
Tuned higher, it can become incisive and almost "timbale-like," perfect for accents that cut through a wall of guitars. Tuned lower, it retains definition while offering a rounder impact, very useful for deep fills or low responses to a snare drum. In a set composed of several Octobans, this length-based logic makes note transitions more homogeneous: intervals become more regular, and phrases more musical, even at high speed.
