Historical Context and Positioning Within the Range
The STARPHONIC snare drum is positioned as a decidedly high-end model, focused on thin shells, distinctive material choices, and hardware designed to optimize musicality. Within the range, it stands out as a characterful snare drum, designed for drummers seeking an identifiable sound signature, refined finish, and a more controlled response than a standard snare, especially in the mid and low frequencies.
Target Audience for This Drum/Instrument
This snare drum is primarily aimed at intermediate to expert drummers who want a centerpiece with an immediately "mixable" sound. Its mid-low balance, warmth, and harmonic control make it well suited for pop, rock, neo-soul, funk, and R&B contexts, where a broad and consistent backbeat is expected. It also performs very well in modern jazz or acoustic settings when a round sound with a softer attack and a pronounced woody texture is desired.

Questions frequently asked
What sound does the Tama Starphonic Walnut 14x7 offer?
The 6-ply walnut shell emphasizes a warm response centered on the low-mids. The 14 x 7-inch size provides a roomy backbeat with a musical sustain that is not aggressive.
Is this snare drum suitable for rock and neo-soul?
This model is suitable for pop, rock, neo-soul, funk, and R&B contexts thanks to its mid-low balance and thick character. Its softer attack can also fit modern jazz or acoustic ensembles.
What is the effect of the Grooved Hoops on this snare drum?
The Grooved Hoops channel the harmonics without overly dampening the resonance. The attack becomes smoother and the sound definition remains clearer, especially at moderate volume levels or close miking.
Is the sensitivity of the snare wires adjustable precisely?
The ratchet Snappy Style adjuster allows fine tuning of the Super Sensitive Hi-Carbon Snappy wires tension. The Linear-Drive throw-off ensures smooth and consistent release, while the removable snare bed plate facilitates maintenance.
What finish does this walnut Starphonic have?
The Gloss Black Walnut Burl finish combines a walnut burl exterior with a glossy lacquer and chrome hardware.
