A simple and effective overdrive in the "pushed amp" spirit

The Cinders Overdrive was designed to capture the unique behavior of a tube amp pushed just right: an attack that "bites," harmonics that appear naturally, and saturation that remains musical. Its approach is straightforward, with a very pedalboard-friendly philosophy: a 100% analog circuit, immediate handling, and a wide range of usable gain without getting lost in unnecessary options.

Designed and developed with TC Electronic's DNA, it targets both vintage tones and modern uses while preserving the personality of your guitar and pickups. The result: an overdrive that sits easily in a mix, whether you play clean, crunch, or stack it with other distortions.

Who is it for, which styles, and in what contexts?

The TC Electronic Cinders Overdrive is aimed at guitarists seeking a reliable and intuitive pedal, from beginners looking for their first "real" overdrive to seasoned musicians needing a simple-to-adjust drive for live use. It feels particularly at home in blues, rock, indie, and classic rock, but can also serve as a gain and volume boost for more aggressive styles, provided the amp or a distortion pedal behind takes over.

In the studio, it excels at adding depth to a clean tone, thickening a rhythm part without overpowering it, or providing natural sustain to a lead. On stage, its compact size and top-mounted jacks facilitate integration on a tight pedalboard, and its dynamic character allows for great control via guitar volume and pick attack.

Settings, controls, and integration into your chain

The pedal offers three very classic but highly effective potentiometers. Drive adjusts the amount of saturation, from a slight "edge of breakup" grit to a denser, singing overdrive. Tone functions as a global tone control: it can darken for a rounder, vintage sound or, conversely, add attack and presence to cut through the mix. Volume sets the output level, handy for a true solo boost or to push the amp input harder.

Thanks to its true bypass, the Cinders turns off while remaining as transparent as possible to your signal. It naturally sits at the start of the chain after a tuner and compressor but also works very well in "stacking" before or after another overdrive depending on the goal: before to thicken and increase gain, after to raise the overall level and saturation feel.

The sound

The Cinders delivers a warm, organic, and expressive overdrive with a response that follows your picking dynamics: playing softly keeps the sound relatively clean and articulated; picking harder brings out saturation with a more biting edge. Its wide gain range allows for anything from a subtle crunch to enrich a clean tone to building a thicker rock rhythm without excessive compression that would lose chord definition.

The sound remains easy to dial in for different guitars: with single-coils, you get a lively and detailed grain; with humbuckers, you gain density and sustain while maintaining good control via the Tone. This is typically the kind of overdrive that makes you want to play "with the volume knob" and work on nuances, just like pushing an amp at the right spot.
