An Evolution of the Original Phonkify, Designed to Go Further

The Phonkify X follows the legacy of the original Phonkify, already acclaimed for its very musical approach to the envelope filter. Here, Tsakalis Audioworks pushes the concept further by adding a more versatile octave section and multiplying voicing options. The result: a pedal that covers classic funk codes (percussive attack, expressive quack, punchy bass lines) while opening the door to more modern, thicker, and truly experimental textures.

Who Is It For? From Nervous Funk to Creative Textures

The Tsakalis Phonkify X is aimed at guitarists and bassists who want a dynamic effect capable of reacting to playing style, whether with a pick or fingers. It excels in funk, disco, soul, fusion, groovy rock, but is equally inspiring for electro parts, cinematic intros, or lead passages that need to "cut through the mix."

In live settings, its momentary mode is perfect for accentuating a phrase (a single filtered note, an octave wink on a chorus). In the studio, the choice of filters and the inversion of the Filter/Octave order allow precise sculpting of the sound's place, from rounder to more aggressive, without stacking multiple pedals.

Controls, Modes, and Ergonomics: A Pedal Built for the Pedalboard

The Phonkify X is organized around two independent sections: Filter and Octave. On the envelope filter side, a selector gives you access to three modes: Low Pass for warm and smooth sounds, Band Pass for a sharper, more cutting attack, and Combo-Blend for more complex textures, highly expressive under the fingers.

A major asset: the pedal accepts an expression pedal to control the filter frequency range. Handy for switching from tight funk to a wider sweep, or for achieving almost synth-like movements without letting go of your instrument. On the octave side, you choose between upper octave, lower octave, or blend of both to thicken a riff, transform a line into a pseudo-bass, or add a "talky/synthy" character to your parts.

Finally, the ergonomics are designed for the stage: momentary or latching operation for each effect, a dedicated switch to select the Filter and Octave order, and a main volume to adjust output level according to your guitar, bass, and the rest of your chain.

The Sound

The Tsakalis Phonkify X delivers a decidedly funky personality: a filter that "speaks," with a sensitive response to attack, and an octave section capable of making the low end growl or adding aggressive brightness depending on the chosen voicing. The internal voltage doubling provides a sense of space and breathing, particularly useful if you play loudly, with high-output pickups, or if you place the octave before an already aggressive amp.

Depending on the selected order, you will get either a more "synth-like" and transformed sound (octave feeding the filter) or a clearer, more articulated groove (filter sculpting before the octave). In all cases, the pedal remains expressive: it rewards playing nuances and adapts equally well to tight picking and sustained notes, for more atmospheric textures.
