What is u-he MFM2 for?
u-he MFM2 is a digital delay plugin designed for modern music production, creative mixing, and sound design. It is used both to place a voice or guitar in space with controlled repetitions and to deconstruct a beat using feedback networks, synchronized modulation, and granular/diffused processing. Ideal as an insert to sculpt a sound or as an auxiliary to build a coherent atmosphere, MFM2 excels in rhythmic textures, atmospheric tails, and stereo movement effects.
Main Features
Input Section: control of behavior before the delay
MFM2 includes 2 input processors to prepare the signal before sending it to the delay lines. The Transient control allows attenuation or accentuation of attacks (useful to prevent a delay from overly amplifying snare hits, or conversely to make a pattern more punchy). The non-resonant input filters serve to clean the bandwidth or to split the spectrum into two stereo bands with independent delay settings (for example, treating lows and highs differently).
4 delay lines: from precise delay to experimental networks
The core of MFM2 is based on 4 delay lines that can operate in tempo-synced mode, free time, or even MIDI note-controlled. The latter approach opens the door to tuned comb filter effects, very effective for transforming pads, creating musical resonances, or making a percussive element "sing." Each line can become part of a complex rhythmic pattern or an evolving atmosphere, depending on the amount of feedback and how you route everything.
Filters and feedback matrix: sculpt, animate, create movement
MFM2 offers resonant filters that you can place at different points in the audio path, with several modes: low pass, high pass, band pass, band reject, and allpass (phaser type). The highlight remains the Feedback Matrix: you choose how each line feeds the others. In simple configuration, you get a clear and controlled delay; in User Matrix, you create cross-feedback loops, custom ping-pong effects, diffusion effects, and quasi-"reverb" behaviors based on very dense echoes.
Pre-feedback effects and dynamics: character and control
Two effect blocks allow processing before the feedback, which radically changes the result: a bit crusher or soft clipper in the loop can produce a delay that degrades with each repetition, while a phaser, frequency shifter, or dedicated filtering can generate rich spectral movements. To finalize, MFM2 includes 2 compressors/limiters (Peak or RMS modes as needed) and can also handle more "mix-ready" behaviors such as ducked or more contained delays. Finally, an output shield (soft clipper) helps tame peaks when loops become very dense.
Modulation and interface: a delay that lives with your track
To maintain a musical and lively output, MFM2 includes 4 synchronizable LFOs (multiple waveforms and user shapes), 2 synchronizable and loopable MSEG envelope generators, as well as a modulation matrix with 4 slots and the possibility to modulate depth via a second source. The interface is resizable from 70% to 200%, improving comfort during sessions. With 400+ presets, you start from ready-to-use atmospheres and then fine-tune according to your mix.

Questions frequently asked
Is the U-HE MFM2 compatible with Mac and Windows?
Compatibility covers macOS 10.10 or later and Windows 7 or later. An Intel Nehalem or newer processor is required on Mac, with support for Apple M1. On Windows, AMD Bulldozer processors or newer are also supported.
Can the delay repeats be synced to the project tempo?
The 4 delay lines can be tempo-synced, set to free time, or triggered by MIDI notes.
How to create a ping-pong delay or a diffuse ambiance?
The Feedback Matrix defines how the 4 delay lines feed back the signal. The User Matrix mode allows building cross-feedback loops, custom ping-pongs, and dense diffusion-type echoes. Resonant filters can be placed at various points along the audio path.
Does the delay allow different processing for lows and highs?
The input section includes non-resonant filters that can split the spectrum into two stereo bands. Each band can then receive independent delay settings, while the Transient control adjusts the level of attacks before the delay lines.
Which effects and modulations are integrated?
Two pre-feedback effect blocks offer soft clipper, bit crusher, phaser, and frequency shifter. Movement can be controlled by 4 tempo-syncable LFOs, 2 MSEG envelopes, and a 4-slot modulation matrix. Two compressors/limiters and an output shield help control feedback loop peaks.
