The UAD SSL 4000 G Bus Compressor is a bus compression plugin designed to bring the sonic signature of the British SSL 4000 G consoles to your mixes. Its main role is to "glue" elements together (drums, instruments, vocals, effects), increase the sense of density and stability, and enhance punch without sacrificing clarity. It is a staple on the mix bus to achieve a more "finished" mix, but it also excels on drum buses, vocal buses, guitar buses, or even on individual sources when seeking musical, clean, and energetic compression.

An end-to-end emulation crafted for the SSL sound

This compressor replicates the behavior of the famous G Bus by relying on detailed modeling of both console and rack versions, including the circuit character and control voltage (CV) summing. The result: a transparent glue, a snappy attack, and a precise stereo image that helps your mix sound wider, stronger, and better organized, even with moderate gain reduction.

The "right" set of controls, quick to dial in

The panel remains intentionally simple to get straight to the point: you can go from subtle dynamic control ("barely a wiggle") to more pronounced and percussive compression ("bury the needle") using the Threshold and Makeup Gain. Attack and Release times are calibrated for bus work, and the Auto Release mode adapts the release to the music to maintain movement without excessive pumping.

Modern enhancements for a more controlled mix bus

To adapt to current productions (808s, deep kicks, heavily loaded basses), the internal Side Chain Filter reduces the compressor's sensitivity to low frequencies and prevents pumping. The Mix control enables parallel compression directly within the plugin, useful for thickening drums or vocals while preserving the natural attack of the dry signal. The Headroom setting adjusts the overall operating level, helpful for matching the plugin to your gain staging and maintaining consistent compression across projects.

External sidechain, Auto Fade, and artist presets

The UAD Native version adds the ability for external sidechain to trigger compression from another track (for example, a kick driving a musical bus). As in some SSL configurations, the Auto Fade function offers a signature fade slope up to 60 seconds, ideal for quickly finalizing a song ending. Finally, presets crafted by renowned engineers and producers provide reliable starting points for the mix bus, drums, or subgroups.
