Summary of This Method
Following the previous volumes in the Classics series (Classic Solos and Classic Duets), this method offers a demanding and structured selection of 24 standard studies for flute. Mary Karen Clardy gathers iconic pieces chosen for their musical value and effectiveness in daily practice: articulation, finger equality, phrasing flexibility, breath control, and intonation stability.
The content is based on three major composers of the study repertoire: Carl Joachim Andersen (excerpts from op. 21, 30, 33, 37, and 41), Antoine Benoit Tranquille Berbiguier (Studies), and Ernesto Köhler (Romantic Études op. 66). This balance between classical writing and romantic virtuosity allows for stylistic variety and addresses complementary technical challenges while developing expressiveness.
For each study, an optional second flute part has been composed: a real pedagogical asset to strengthen tempo sense, tone quality, rhythmic precision, and stylistic coherence. It also provides a "guided" playing situation, particularly useful for consolidating breathing reflexes, placement, and phrase direction.
Finally, the performance notes, biographies, and glossary provide concrete references (terminology, context, intentions) to interpret these studies as true musical pieces rather than mere exercises. The 2nd flute parts, recorded on the CD, offer motivating accompaniment to practice regularly and gain confidence.
