Launched in 1993, the Vandoren V16 was developed to meet a very specific demand from jazz musicians, especially in the United States: "a JAVA-type reed with even more wood." This reed is primarily aimed at intermediate to advanced saxophonists seeking a more substantial feel and a true sonic presence. At strength 4, it is particularly suitable for players with good breath support and a stable embouchure.

Sound and design

Thanks to a thicker tip (the vibrating area) and a longer table (the part resting on the mouthpiece), the V16 promotes precise response and impactful attacks. The result: a bright timbre, good projection, and a sound that can remain rich and deep when paired with a jazz-oriented mouthpiece. Its calibration is slightly stronger than average, offering solid hold and consistent response when playing with intensity.
