What Waves Abbey Road RS124 Compressor Is For

Waves Abbey Road RS124 Compressor is a compression plugin designed to deliver vintage tube compression with an exceptionally smooth, dense, and musical result. It is used both in virtual tracking (within your DAW) and in mixing and mastering: to stabilize a vocal, thicken a bass, solidify a drum bus, smooth a synth, or "glue" a mix bus with compression rich in character. Its strength lies in creating sustain and color without losing the sense of depth, with that famous "Abbey Road" touch historically heard on countless recordings.

Main Features

The "Holy Grail" of smooth compressors, precisely modeled

The RS124 is an Abbey Road modification of the Altec 436B compressor, produced in extremely limited quantities (only 25 units). This rarity explains its status as a studio secret: at the time, Abbey Road engineers did not hesitate to push the input to achieve heavy gain reduction (up to 15 to 20 dB) and obtain a lush, thick, and musical result, particularly iconic on bass lines. The plugin reproduces this typical response: compression that rounds off, densifies, and "wraps" the source while maintaining an organic feel.

Two versions: Studio and Cutter, two complementary behaviors

Because no RS124 sounded exactly like another, Waves offers two carefully selected flavors. The Studio version emulates a unit known to be more aggressive, capable of taming transients with faster attack and release: perfect for modern vocals, punchy snare, or a drum bus that needs to hold firmly. The Cutter version, with a slower attack, leans toward more gradual and "wider" compression, very effective in bus compression and mastering when you seek cohesion without crushing impact.

Super Fuse: when you want character and controlled aggression

The Super Fuse mode alters the release behavior by aligning it with the attack, generating compression that seems to "struggle" and produces a brutal, lively, and extremely audible effect. It's an excellent option to transform a drum bus, enhance the energy of a beat, or create a crushed and excited room sensation, while maintaining a credible analog signature.

A modern workflow for today's mixing

Beyond vintage sound, the plugin adds essential features for current production. You can work in mono, stereo, and dual mono, as well as in Mid and Sides to control compression of the center (kick, bass, vocals) independently from the sides (ambiences, guitars, reverbs). A Sidechain Highpass filter prevents low frequencies (kick/bass) from triggering excessive compression, useful for keeping a solid low end without undesirable pumping. A high-frequency roll-off helps soften the color and tame bright sources. Finally, the Dry/Mix control facilitates "New York" style parallel compression without complex routing: you can crush hard then blend in the dry signal to preserve attack.

Production-oriented options and presets

For cleaner adjustment on certain sources, an Auto Hold option can reduce compression artifacts. The plugin also includes presets created by professionals, including settings signed by Beatles' remixer Guy Massey, to quickly start on practical use cases (vocals, bass, buses, etc.).
