What Waves Abbey Road Saturator Is For

Waves Abbey Road Saturator is an analog saturation plugin designed to add color, density, and a sense of "presence" to tracks and buses. It suits both subtle treatments (more incisive vocals, livelier synths, thicker guitars) and marked saturations to add punch to drums and bass, or to push a more aggressive and experimental aesthetic. Thanks to the Mid-Side processing, it is particularly effective for widening the stereo image, reinforcing the center (kick, snare, bass), and adding coherence to a stereo bus.

Main Features

Two Console Signatures: REDD (tubes) and TG (solid-state)

The plugin lets you choose between the tube-styled saturation of Abbey Road REDD consoles and the solid-state saturation of the TG12345. The interest lies not only in the "color," but in how the input, gain, and output stages interact to move from a slight harmonic brightness to a more pronounced distortion, while maintaining musical control suited for mixing.

The "Secret Weapon": EMI TG12321 Compander and Compansion Effect

At the heart of the Waves Abbey Road Saturator identity is the emulation of the TG12321 Compander, repurposed by Abbey Road engineers to excite a signal and help it cut through the mix. By adjusting the crossover frequencies, you target the area to emphasize: lower settings to reinforce the impact of a bass or kick, higher settings to add presence and brightness to vocals, overheads, or melodic instruments.

EQ Before and After Saturation: Sculpting What Distorts

The pre and post saturation EQ sections allow a "studio" approach: you can boost a frequency band to saturate it more, then rebalance the final output. The result is a more controlled, clearer, and better-integrated distortion, whether to thicken an instrument, soften an overly clinical source, or provide a more credible analog feel.

Mid-Side, Mix/Dry, and Phase: Precision and Creativity

In addition to the classic stereo mode, Mid or Sides processing opens modern mixing possibilities: reinforcing the center foundation while keeping the sides airy, or conversely gently saturating the sides to widen the stereo field. The Mix/Dry control facilitates parallel saturation, and the Phase adjustment changes the character of the harmonics to explore textures ranging from soft saturation to a sharper grain.
