What Waves CLA Drums Is For
Waves CLA Drums is a drum mixing plugin designed to speed up the setup of a professional sound on recorded tracks (drum mics) as well as on separate outputs from samplers and drum machines. The goal is simple: quickly add punch, attack, and depth to each element (kick, snare, toms, overheads, room, and cymbals/hi-hats), while maintaining overall coherence in the mix. Ideal for rock, pop, punk, metal, indie, or contemporary music where the drums need to remain clear, energetic, and "up front" without becoming aggressive.
Main Features
Dedicated processing by mic position
The core of CLA Drums relies on separate processing for the different drum tracks. Each source benefits from a specific focus to enhance what matters most in the mix: weight and impact on the kick, crack and body on the snare, definition on the toms, and image as well as air on the overheads and room. The result: you work fast without wasting time searching for the "right order" of effects.
Simple and effective EQ: snap, depth, or cleanup
Two EQ controls (low/high) allow you to add snap (attack and brightness) and depth (foundation and weight), or conversely to tame harshness and reduce muddiness in the low-midrange. This tool is designed for quick action: perfect for repositioning a snare in a dense mix or restoring definition to a kick that was recorded too round.
Built-in reverb: 3 ambiances to place the drums
With 3 reverb modes, CLA Drums adds space without multiplying buses and auxiliaries. Whether you're looking for a short ambiance to "glue" the drums, a larger room feel, or a more pronounced reverb for a deliberate effect, you can position the drums in the stereo field and mix depth with just a few adjustments.
Hard or soft gate: control to "gated drums" sound
The gate offers two behaviors: hard for a sharp cut and very chopped drum effects, and soft for a more natural cleanup. This is especially useful for reducing bleed on toms or tightening a snare, but also for recreating "gated drums" textures in modern or vintage productions.
Selective compression: choose your punch
CLA Drums makes compression easy by allowing you to compress some elements and not others. You can thus keep a more open room sound while making kick and snare denser, or conversely emphasize attack on the overheads. This approach helps maintain musical dynamics while achieving the expected energy in the final mix.
Effects optimized for drums
The plugin includes 5 effects, each with 3 modes, designed to be relevant according to the 5 targeted drum sounds. The idea is not to offer dozens of parameters, but quick musical choices that "just fit" the key elements, to move from rough mix to finished mix more efficiently.

Questions frequently asked
Is Waves CLA Drums compatible with macOS Sonoma and Apple Silicon?
Compatibility is announced with macOS Catalina 10.15 through Sonoma 14, on both Intel and Apple Silicon processors. The specified configuration requires 8 GB of RAM and 16 GB of disk space.
Can kick, snare, and toms be processed separately?
Each track can be targeted based on its position: kick drum, snare, toms, room, overheads, and cymbals/hi-hat. This setup allows adjustment of the kick's weight, the snare's crack, or the toms' definition. Compression can be selectively applied to certain elements.
What type of gate does this plugin offer?
Two gate behaviors are available: hard for a sharp cutoff and soft for a more natural cleanup.
How many reverbs are available in CLA Drums?
Three reverb modes are integrated to add a short ambience, a larger room feel, or a more pronounced effect. The settings allow placing drum elements in the depth and stereo field of the mix.
Can overheads and room mics be processed within the plugin?
Overheads and room tracks are among the supported sources. Processing includes a low/high EQ, a 3-mode reverb, and 5 effects each offering 3 modes.
